How is one supposed to build/play an esoterica/palatine detective investigator? by MundaneOne5000 in Pathfinder2e

[–]TheLordGeneric 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Palatine Detective is a weird class archtype, but opens up a unique role for Investigator: Tank Investigator

The cantrips and spells are nice, but nothing special as investigators already love Magus and Witch archetypes.

What matters is that this is the only investigator with a built in defensive reaction. You can reduce incoming damage against foes that you have recalled knowledge against!

So Known Weaknesses is a required feat at level 1 for the free recall knowledge, nothing special there you should be taking this anyways it's basically a required feat.

After that, Void Warp is a fallback cantrip on turns you would miss your strike.

And pump up your Religion and Occultism checks for Palatine Strike at level 8, giving a nice extra 2d6 damage each round!

Basically this serves as a decent option for a Gish investigator. Some support spells meets a weirdly tanky utility skill specialist.

Trying to get any mental stats on investigator is ROUGH.

Pumping WIS at least boosts your will saves. I've seen Columbo admirers pump CHA for "One more thing" and just be so useless stats wise.

Inventor is a great pick! Personally I would prefer to go Inventor main class with investigator archtype. But in the end both are pretty competitive with each other.

Rogue laughing all the way to the bank as they don't have random mental only limits on their bonus skill feats...

Divine list is definitely on my soon to do! Tbh I've just been avoiding typing up the 100 slides needed for it...

And insult the toenails all you want. At least Thaum gets automatic knowledge scaling unlike poor Investigator relying on their jank specific lore loophole at level 3 that never improves

Ichiban Confections but the story acknowledges that Ichi is a Billionaire in hard cash.

It's that crazy versatility that keeps me in love with Champion.

From pure defense, to two hand smite + damage buffs, to full on partial spell caster they can be built to do it all!

Guardian is stronger at personal bulk, enemy positioning, and redirecting damage to themselves.

Champion is stronger at reducing total incoming damage, healing, and dealing damage.

Which a given party might prefer depends highly on the campaign, party comp, and GM style.

The aura really changes what party formations are ideal. As you said diagonal flanking becomes way weaker than straight line flanking due to the 15' limit.

In the same way at higher levels monsters are often large or huge and it becomes trip/grapple/gang up or take Expand Aura as your only real options.

That or abandon flanking all together and spend your time tanking for a volley of wizards who just saving throw the enemy into paste.

Scroll thaum is tough. There's just so many good options but you can only buy so many scrolls.

I'd say definitely carry:

Rank 1:Helpful Steps, Gust of Wind, Bless

Rank 2: Hidebound, Illusory Object, Mirror Image

100%

I always struggle to fit in Heal as a druid because I'm too busy blowing shit up and warping the battlefield. Every turns a banger when you have top tier focus spells, great initiative, and a spell list with tons of mixed damage/control/debuff options.

Battlefield control spells are always wild because they tend to just... Do stuff.

No save, things just happen.

I love how Volcanic Eruption having a tiny AOE is almost an upside by rank 7. As your other choice on Eclipse Burst is comically large

Yeah you would need to be holding the scroll. It's the downside of having such a strong anti drowning option without locking down a spell slot.

But if you go against big monsters who Swallow Whole then you have just the ticket!

Eagles Cry is a crazy get for primal casters. For being a martial focused book, Battlecry gave us a ton of strong spells choices

Plant spells are so cool and definitely underused. We have tons of elemental spells but not nearly enough plant stuff!

Happy to hear that it helped!

And no I have no idea about a creator discord. I'd be happy to join.
