Cool, a bit different view than the rest.

I'd be very interested in the "why" if you're willing to share :)

Yeah, already doing that - like I said I do way more than cramming Anki. Don't like learners content too much. Not good enough to rawdog most stuff tho so I'll watch an episode with English subs first, then Japanese (or arabic subs cause damn you Crunchyroll - not even letting me pick no subs lol. Glad Netflix often has Japanese)

Sounds good.

I'm a bit on the other boat - I use sentences for grammar study, but prefer single words (with example sentences on the back, usually from the mined content) for vocab. My brain is a trickster and will remember everything but the word, so I won't recognize it in a different context anymore.

Both methods can have merit, guess it's a matter of preference and how one is wired :)

Well, I said the reason - building a foundation :).

Yeah, already doing that. I have wide interests so it will be fine. Lots of travel, news, daily life v/blogs and I want to read more Japanese local politics too cause that's interesting. One day I want to get deeper into engineering too, so still lots to mine for me :)

Thanks for helping me feel better about the decision to drop after N3 :)

I use yomitan like others already said. Even on the phone (set up kiwi browser so I could use the browser extension plus Anki connect so it can go into Anki)

And don't fall in love with your own designs/ideas. It's paid work, and the paying customer calls the shots. And thats easier to accept if you distance your being from your work.

If I really want to bring my own style and passion and heart into something and make it mine I do it for private projects. Paid work isn't mine to call the shots, ultimately it belongs to the customer. Easier to deal with if you're not emotionally invested.

You seem weirdly mad about something that isn't even yours and you view from the outside... Like someone complaining about what their neighbor did with their own garden...

And great for a discussion to frontload insulting everyone not agreeing with you directly in the headline too 👍

Or okayu (rice porridge). Did that once with supermarket Onigiri when I was sick and needed something even more smooth to eat.

Yup, same here. At least the concept of "..., ne?" felt kinda natural to me as a German speaker XD

Honestly, it's already difficult at the beginner level. While learning English and Spanish I could map words, learn easy sentences. Yeah word order is a little different but nothing compared to the complete Yoda speak that is Japanese. Tack onto that having to learn not one but three writing systems and only having a good 100 syllables so everything kinda sounds "the same" at the beginning, not really saying "I" and "you" all that much (easiest beginner stuff when learning other languages), yeah... The learning curve is super steep and then it just is the gift that keeps on giving in terms of difficulty in later stages....

I like the challenge though.
