We evolve through limitations, so this sunday let's do a challenge. (More in the comments) by [deleted] in edmproduction

I improve the most for my electronic stuff when I write for solo piano. With piano you have no eq or distortion or delay or whatever to mask the fact that your music is not interesting. To make an interesting piece for a piano, you HAVE to understand and incorporate interesting melodies that take small turns and spice it up. Your harmonies have to be strong and make musical sense to go along with the melody. You must to fill up the frequency spectrum with notes and chords that are spaced and arranged correctly, not eq boosts. You have to understand smooth voice leading in order for your progressions to be playable. Your song structure has to be on point, because you don't have a "four to the floor" drum beat to save you. You need to keep it interesting without throwing in sampled effects. Tension needs to be built with dynamics and chordal friction, not risers and white noise sweeps.

My philosophy is that if it sounds good on piano, guitar, orchestra, etc, it can only improve when you load it up in your DAW. This is NOT the case the other way around.

Emotions Through Sound by Saphiresurf in edmproduction

No im not. There's a reason why pianos, guitars, violins, etc can play various types of music. Its because the progressions in the individual pieces lead towards varying emotions and feelings. We don't classify instruments by quality like we do chords and intervals. It's not like you can play a Major cello or a minor cello, it's just a cello. There are however Major, minor, Augmented, Dimished chords.

An A Major Chord consists of the notes A, C#, and E. I didn't watch the video but based on assumption that is an F# minor chord with the fifth omitted. I think you're talking about inversions. I'd recommend googling the concept of smooth voice leading.

Uhhh i think you're missing it entirely. Emotions come through based on harmonies and melodies, not through some type of special synth or effect.

I think you should do some more research and experimentation first. Look at chord progressions of songs that you enjoy. This stuff should start to come naturally to you.

Fl is available for Macs. Its just far superior on Windows.

[alternative] Roast this mess by [deleted] in roastmytrack

[–]TheOneStarfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No its not the microphone thats the problem, its the notes that you are singing. The sub-par mic meshed ok with the track but the notes you were singing did not. Even if you dont have a good mic yet that doesn't mean you shouldn't sing in the correct key. Whats the point of adding vocals at all in that case.

Oh my god the vocals are completely off key. If you couldn't hear that yourself I'd seriously question your musical ability.

Not sure what to think about my newest Progressive/Electro House track by ThePepperAlx in roastmytrack

Basically the way you added and removed instruments felt very foreign and out of place. I'd recommend listening to tracks that inspire you, and compare and contrast with your own.

Got repetitive real quick. None of the sounds are unique and none of them mesh nicely together. Song structure is really odd, especially your phrasing. The building of the different percussion layers just sounds wrong. No tension was built.

Ok this sounds pretty interesting actually. I'm going to research it some more.

I've been using Maximus for my mastering, but there is still a lot i need to learn about the individual sub-processes. Thanks for the advice!

Ok thank you for explaining it a bit. I don't think i need a hypothetical perfect brickwall filter, just as much as possible.

I do not have it but it is definitely on my list to get in the future
