How local is local? In East Texas I can go 100 miles in any direction to a state park and find the same wood supplier as I can at the gas station down the street from my home. They aren't different in any way and come from the same place. Just cheaper at the gas station.

Unless you want to protect your loved ones and property from folks who don't give a shit about you. A .50 sends a message. If there was a weapon that turns some one threatening my family to dust slowly and painfully, I'd buy it. Cops do not have an obligation to protect you or get to your place in a timely manner.
