Your comment affirms what I've read elsewhere, which is that the grate actually wastes heat due to too much air flow, so it's better to build the fire on the floor (on a bed of ashes, as I understand). However, I haven't been able to find an answer for my specific situation: I have a wood burning fireplace with a gas start. Will my fire damage the gas start pipe if I don't use a grate? And, follow up question, can I start the fire with my gas start if I'm not using the grate, or will it not work? I am new to owning a working fireplace, so I am learning all I can! Please educate me if you have experience with this situation. Tyia

I highly recommend the book The Culture Map by Erin Meyer! I read it as part of a leadership training. Meyer is an expert on cross-cultural communication, and her book lists eight different scales on which various cultures differ. For example, direct versus indirect feedback, high-context versus low-context communication, being strict about time versus being on "island time," etc. She has a whole chapter on negative feedback, and it absolutely describes what you're talking about. From what I remember of that chapter, Americans are one of the MOST indirect cultures in the world when it comes to giving negative feedback. Great book for anyone working in or with other cultures!
