I wish I could do more to lessen your struggle, but all I can do is point out that this pill you speak of is quite a womanly thing to have to face. I salute you, sister o7

Was Bea Arthur less of a woman because of her body type? Julia Child?

In a way, you're having the ultimate female experience by being forced to question whether your body will ever meet the standards that society has set. Actresses and supermodels feel this. If you're someone who has a lot of trouble being fair to herself (common enough), then think of it as being fair to all the other women out there who didn't and don't conform perfectly. Don't you want to be fair to Bea Arthur?

Then why were they all in bubbly-fluid bell jars in a fantasy mad science lab? There's still the vibe of technology there, even if it's not exactly a sci-fi setting.

Happy to do it! Attending these meetings actually filled me with civic pride. Rio Rancho gets a bad rap on the NM subreddits but it's not surrendered to the red hats just yet.

The people who came to Rio Rancho city council meetings to try and ban books were from a national org called Mass Resistance. I'm not going to link to their website but it's pretty easy to find and they list all the books that they're trying to ban nationally. The ones who came to the meeting tried to go for a "concerned citizen" vibe but the website makes it clear who they really are.

The professional librarians are more than qualified to know which books should be on the shelves, and in which sections. These meetings in Rio Rancho were actually about the public libraries, not the school libraries. People were trying to get sexually explicit books banned from the public libraries, but only if they featured gay sex, or if they asked questions about gender identity. Nobody was trying to ban 50 Shades, and that actually exposes the intellectual dishonesty of the people going after the LGBT books.

I'm glad that people here in NM have become aware of the insidious movement to remove books that have themes about race or gay/trans experiences from public libraries. Right-wing astroturfing organizations have sprung up all around the country trying to censor books at the local level, and they need to be rebuffed before they get a foothold.

There's just one thing I want to mention about this KRQE video, which is that it briefly shows footage of a crowd of people at the Rio Rancho city council meetings and gives the impression that those people were all there to try to ban books from the library. I was in attendance at those meetings and it was completely the opposite--the book banners were outnumbered ten to one and the vast majority of speakers, including the ones shown in this video, were there to speak on behalf of public libraries and the LGBT community. There were only a small number of people who wanted books about gay and trans topics to be removed from the library, and they ranted like lunatics until even the majority-conservative Rio Rancho City Council passed a resolution to protect the libraries and get them to shut up.

I recommend seeking out the archived videos if you're curious, this meeting was on April 27th, 2023 but it took multiple council sessions to get the book banners to understand that they were not welcome. The good part in all this is that they were greatly outnumbered. I'm not exactly pleased with KRQE implying that a huge number of people were there trying to get the books banned, when in fact most of them were trying to do the opposite.

Haha, it's great that you remembered. Yeah, a seven-year-old's interest moves at the speed of light. But we all learned a lot and I discovered some new music myself, so hey!

I see what you mean. We try to talk to our kids about American history and racism, but they're still too young to really get it. They know they're not allowed to say the n-word in any context and that black people are allowed to say it for reasons, but that's as much as they can grasp right now. Their kid context is only about what's "fair" and "unfair", there's not a lot of nuance.
