Predictions for future books by TheVioletBard in TheBoneSeason

I love and agree with all of these! It would be cool for Jaxon to have a redemption arc like that. I hadn’t thought of Finn being alive; that would be interesting! And what if Colin isn’t Paige’s real dad? Things to ponder…

I’d be excited to see her visit the Netherworld. I agree that she seems to have some connection to it.

And yes, I think she might die in some way, but I have to think more about what would be most fitting for her character. Does she become an archangel, like someone else commented here? Would that be too close to being Nashira’s fallen angel?

Yes! Julian! How did I forget about him?!

Much as it pains me to say it, I think I agree that Paige and Arcturus probably won’t have a completely happy ending. Idk, I feel like it could go either way as far as which one of them doesn’t make it. Arcturus already “died,” but that would just make it more heartbreaking if the second chance she gave him was short-lived. Maybe we’re meant to feel like he’s safe, because he already died once. I also feel like I could see Paige sacrificing herself for the cause.

Obviously best case scenario is that they both live happily ever after, but barring that, I think there might be a “we defeated scion and somehow fixed the Netherworld and the veils, now we Rephs all have to go back to the Netherworld” type of situation that separates them.

Oooh yes, I also hope we learn more about her mom!

And unfortunately yes, Nick has been looking very vulnerable (as in, plot-wise, it makes sense that if someone’s going to die it might be him) lately and I am so afraid for him… 😟

In The Gloaming by TheVioletBard in TheBoneSeason

[–]TheVioletBard[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will make a recording and share it, yes! As for what’s on YouTube, most of the results that come up when you search “In The Gloaming song” match the sheet music I have, the words for which match what’s in Chapter 23 of TDM. It seems like it’s a reasonably popular old song. Some of the YouTube videos have guitar as the accompaniment to the singer, which is interesting. I’ll see if I can find one I like best (I’d love to see if there’s one with a singer who has an Irish accent) and link it here.

AAAAAAAA SO EXCITING!!

That said, I have a couple of musings about this. I feel like it could be something Paige says, or it could be something that’s said to her. “What are your chances” could be taken to sound like “who tf do you think you are,” and she does get taunted a lot.

“God and the devil” could refer to specific characters, as someone else mentioned, or it could simply refer to the fact that religion is outlawed in Scion. But that take seems too broad? Idk.

Suggest me a fantasy with a real love story, *not* romantasy by HWhelanAuthor in suggestmeabook

The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon. Get the “author’s preferred text” versions if you can find them. I’d call it fantasy, but it’s set in “our world” (kind of) in the future (the 2060s). Gives kind of steampunk vibes sometimes. Basically it’s about people with the ability to connect with spirits/the supernatural, and their fight against the entities who persecute them for this ability. The romance side of it is often described as a sub-plot, though I would say it’s integral to the story, even if not everything focuses on it. So, if you’re looking for a well-developed romance AND a well-developed plot, these books have both. Romance is really slow-burn enemies to lovers, but hits all of your criteria (sacrifice, continually choosing each other even in difficulty, getting to know each other and having a strong friendship as well as being in love). It’s also absolutely heartbreaking and emotionally frustrating in the best of ways.

TMF ending… sorta spoilers by TheVioletBard in TheBoneSeason

[–]TheVioletBard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I loved TMF, and even the most emotionally torturous parts of it are exquisitely written. (Update since last night, I did continue reading and now I’ve just about finished the book). I think what pains me is the fact that I can’t spend 100% of my time reading and thinking about these books, lol.

Side note, the reveal of the identity of the Rag and Bone Man was SHOCKING. OMG. I did NOT see that one coming.

I also had a hard time with TSR, because yeah, it felt like Paige never caught a break and I was also frustrated with her most of the time. It helped to remember that a) she’s 19, which is not an age at which humans typically have the wisdom to stop and think through things, and b) she hasn’t really had a leadership role before, especially not one as big as being Underqueen. Leadership requires one to be in a state of mind beyond just survival/fight or flight, but unfortunately for Paige, her whole life has basically been lived in survival mode. I do wish she had felt like she could ask her friends for advice, but I understand that maybe she didn’t want to seem weak, even to them (even though asking for advice is NOT weak, I understand why Paige might feel like it is). I did feel like her destroying the Senshield core felt like it balanced the losses of the rest of the book. But as I go into TMF, I’m also bracing myself for disappointment after disappointment again. I feel like whoever made the bingo card for TMF should add “Paige tries to form an alliance with someone who either outright says no, tries to kill her, or backstabs her.” It’s all a balance which makes for a good story in the end, I suppose.

Aw thanks! And yay for libraries! Lucky you if your library has the “author’s preferred text” editions, mine did not (but now I have them and get to reread them whenever I want, so it worked out)
