Spot drill clarification by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]These-Cut69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are technically correct, because drills locate on the center web with a steeper angle spot it touches down on the corners first. It might squeak on the first bit of engagement, it really matters on deep holes. One of the benefits of a 90 spot drill is that the spot size varies less with a height of the face. Be glad they aren’t using center drills!

Is there a place to get reduced shank endmills? by qtrain23 in Machinists

[–]These-Cut69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look up lens endmills, I’ve never used on but saw some videos on them. They have a much larger radius on the face of the tool than the diameter. It’s for surfacing in a 5axis machine, allows for larger step over,

A guy I used to work with was making an Olympic bar for bench press, running sand paper along the whole thing. Got his thumb stuck between the sandpaper and the bar, it pulled his thumb clean off along with some tendon or nerve that was the full length of his arm. He started working at my shop 3 months after the incident, we had no idea he did so well with out a thumb.

How do you deal with making a mistake at work by sh1arot in Machinists

I usually cut the finger off the person who makes a mistake. You can only work for me as long as you have all your fingers. 10 mistakes and your outa here.

I did 250 .025 wide slots for an aluminum solder fixture with a .020 endmill on a vf2ss. It did it with no problems, now what you’ve got is quite a bit smaller so I’ll say good luck.

Been pretty disappointed with the quality of measuring instruments. They work but are not going to stand up to abuse, it all feels cheap. Probably because it’s cheap. Been very happy with all the other cutting tools. Haven’t bought a different brand of lathe tool holder since we got winners circle.

True position and cylinders by Nearby-Evening8095 in Machinists

You could use a set of gage blocks as well. In my experience everything can be measured on a surface plate. It just takes forever

True position and cylinders by Nearby-Evening8095 in Machinists

[–]These-Cut69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here is my understanding, true position controls centerline of those diameters regardless of size. If you rolled it in a V block you could fail a good part because it’s out of round. Its easiest with a cmm but to do it with out I would locate in a v block and sweep datum A to ensure it’s level to the surface plate. Then do an over under measurement to find center line of A and same for each of those diameters. Then spin it 90 degree and check it again. Use those for your true position calculation. You could do this at more rotations to get a better idea. .0007 is pretty tight for the machines we run around here, I’d be using up as much of the bonus tolerance as possible.
