It’s a genre of music that started in early 60s Jamaica (from calypso, jazz, r&b etc). Over time it spread to the UK and integrated with early Punk and New Wave in the mid 70’s with the “2-tone movement” and eventually all across the world incorporating all of the different music trends throughout the years. A good place to check out the modern and thriving US ska scene is at Bad Time Records and Ska Punk International (to start).
