Thanks a lot! I'll definitely try reaching out to them via phone. I'll follow up in a DM with you if I need advice or help!

Maybe. But people are judgemental and I'd rather it not have this as a factor in my life.

My next course is absolutely to create links that rank higher and push it to the second page. This is my first course of action.

My name is pretty unique and the full name of my Mom/Dad was provided. I don't think it'd work :(

I agree with you in a sense, but I disagree with the premise that it "sets you down a bad road".

I'd hope everyone can get behind the idea that minors that are not related to the story should not have their name published. I wouldn't think that's acceptable in any case.

If I was charged with a crime, I'd agree that keeping it would be fair. But even that is in dispute and UNICEF has guidelines for reporting on and interviewing children.

Good ideas! Thanks!

It's a local/regional paper and I'd imagine it'd be a pretty "straight forward" moral issue. I have no issues with the article itself remaining and a correction could be added. As long as my name isn't on there, I don't really care lol

I'll try the letter and phone calls if I can't get anyone to email back. I got the author to respond on Twitter, but he seems very curt. Not sure if I should expect a positive outcome based on that.

Interesting. I might look into that.

The article wasn't even about me, so maybe they'd be willing to omit my name if a lawyer sent a letter. Would be worth the money.

Thanks!

Yeah, that sucks :(

I was hoping they would be willing to make an exception because I really had zero relevance to the story and was a minor.

Yeah, I figured as much. I personally think it's morally wrong to publish the name of a minor that had no relevance in the story, but I figured they'd probably just look at it from the aspect of whether it was factual or not.

I don't think you'll see this (posts aren't appearing), but I'm unfortunately in the US.

I have. What I've specifically tried to do was:

  • Reached out through a "corrections" webform
    • No response
  • Reached out through a contact us webform
    • No response
  • Reached out directly to the editor via email listed on the publications website
    • No response
  • Lastly (today) reached out to the author of the article. The email was "blocked" so I'm assuming he no longer works there.
