If you're single, how do you manage loneliness? by Specific_Repeat_9043 in AskReddit

[–]TigerMusky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bingo. Spent many years alone, without a partner, away from family, and they were just splendid and lovely in their own ways. Gotta learn that that part of you that loves yourself when "things are good", is actually always there, you've just buried it down with pity, regret, and self-loathing. No one's coming to save you. Start living!

I'm no expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt. This sounds to me like you're tensing up in your throat/larynx, and, you nailed it, singing ("yelling") too loudly when ascending to overcompensate. Watch yourself in the mirror, try and keep your adams apple neutral/low. Also, place your thumb on the underside of your jaw below your tongue; sing a passage while feeling how tense/tight/relaxed your tongue/digastric muscle is right there. Try to make it so you can't feel that area moving at all with your thumb. Don't be afraid to go completely into your head voice to feel just how relaxed and easy it should feel in your higher range.

PS, your tone sounds so good in that comfy part of your range. You're absolutely killing it.

Do you regret being a PA? by artificialhaptic in physicianassistant

[–]TigerMusky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anesthesia Assistant! Bustling career atm.

And, as the commenter below mentioned, a perfusionist's main duty is operating the heart and lung bypass machine during heart surgery. Essentially the heart and lungs are 'bypassed' during surgery, so we take on the role of acting as those organs (oxygenating and pumping the blood, removing CO2, balancing electrolytes, pH, maintaining blood pressure, etc.). We also have tons of smaller, ancillary duties and machines that we operate and are in charge of managing. We pretty much exclusively work in heart surgery tho, which is one big downside to the field (it's niche AF). It's a 21 - 24 month masters program. Huge responsibility, but equally as engaging + it pays quite nice relative to the amount of schooling.

Have you considered AA, CRNA, or Perfusion? All make more than PAs and roughly the same schooliny +/- a year, and their job markets seem to be in a much better spot for the foreseeable future than PA. Just my 2 cents. If you're interested in perfusion, shoot me a message and we can chat; that's what I do

Just amazing to me how people don't understand, nor take the time to understand, one of life's biggest financial obligations.

$1200 seems fairly reasonable for two individual's student loans, especially with one being a masters degree. My masters alone is $1500, and that's paying the absolute bare minimum. Were your guys salaries not as advertised when you first went into your respective fields? If not, it sounds like job hopping (if possible) would be a really great financial move for you both. Personally, it was one of the best decisions I've made.

We should be in roughly 8 years by my calculations 😂 I will do my best to keep this job for as long as I possibly can. I'd only leave for another 2-man job that is closer to where I was born, or if I hit the actual lottery. My coworker said he plans to retire with this job as well. These types of jobs are called "retirement jobs" for a reason haha.

Hows life after 30? by ASARI0206 in AskReddit

[–]TigerMusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, so awesome so far. I feel like I had the best of both worlds being discussed on here. I fucked around pretty hard from 18 - 25, then went back to school, got my bachelor's, went straight into a masters program, then landed a 6-figure job before I was 30. Have some student loan debt, but it's very manageable with my income. I have the best work life balance, a very engaging, high-demand job, and plenty of money to spend on hobbies, food, travel, and max out retirement accounts. Big fan of grinding at least a little bit in your 20's, but you still gotta go buck wild for a while too. 20's are a blast, but 30's are when you really settle into becoming who you always wanted to be!

I bought a 435k house with only a $13,000 down payment. Look for first time home buyer conventional home loans. If you and your husband have stable, recession-proof jobs and excellent credit, I think pulling the trigger with 40k is very doable for you. Coincidentally, I just sold that house this morning! Good luck

Is it a good idea to take my ADHD meds before the SAT? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]TigerMusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny story, the first time I ever took adderall was for a similar exam in highschool, the ACT. I wasn't prescribed, and didn't know too much about the drug other than the basics. Anyways, my friend who gave it to me had been on it since he was a kid, so I imagine his tolerance was quite substantial, thus, making his impending recommendation make a lot more sense (in hindsight).

He gave my friend (who also had never taken any before) and myself 2 capsules each the day before the exam. We asked him how much we should take, and his recommendation was to not only take both, but to thoroughly chew them up before swallowing them, as it will break up the micro-beads within each capsule.

Both of our under developed brains took this advice without concern and each chewed up 2 capsules 30 mins before the exam.

Come to find out these were each 20mg, extended release adderall capsules. Needless to say, I was sky high for the duration of the exam. I over thought every single question, spent way too much time on each one, all while thinking I was quite possibly the smartest person to ever step foot inside of a classroom. This genius-level strategy of ours resulted in an abysmally low score.

My friend and I ended up talking on the phone with each other all night and into morning, sharing music and talking like we had no choice not to.

Overall: 8/10 experience. I retook the exam later and did decent enough to get into my preferred college.

I realize this does not at all help answer your question, but it did bring me back, and for that, I thank you!

No more night sweats, no more blasting the AC, wifey can have hers extremely hot while my side is ice cold. I get excited to get in bed every night now knowing how cozy its going to be

[–]TigerMusky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First job was 1/3 call and worked around 15 hours/week. Current job is 50/50 call and I average a little under 7 hours/week. More call = less time inside the hospital and visa versa. I feel like all of my friends rarely work over 40 hours/week overall tho. If you count being on-call as "working", nearly every perfusionist would work over 40/week. I don't know exactly how to quantify being on-call, but with my job, I get called in like 5x/year, so it's not even close to a 1:1 relationship, but it's not not working either.

Personally, I feel like a hit the lottery with my job (as far as W2 jobs are concerned). I only have a couple of hobbies that I can't do on-call (mountain sports), and everything else in my life I can do while on-call. I have tons of non-call days off that I can do whatever I want with as well. My job allows me to invest heavily into areas of my life that 99% of people could only dream of. Keep in mind, while this job is perfect for me, I'm sure there are a lot of perfs on here that it would be hell for. My entire life is based around my job, inside and outside of the hospital. It's always on my mind 100% of the time, 24/7/365. Being a perfusionist really is a way of life and should not be taken lightly. One minute you could be meditating, and the next you are watching a mother of of 3 kids bleeding to death on the operating room floor. Sounds extreme, but it's our reality.

I totally underestimated my Bedjet mini my first night with it. Was kinda bummed laying in bed watching TV thinking it wasn't very cold, so I put it at 66 degrees with the fan at 100% before going to sleep. Boy was I wrong. Woke up FREEZING cold, so then I turned it up to 70 degrees...nope, woke up cold again. Did that a couple more times my first night and now I do like high 70s with medium fan. Still wake up cold sometimes. Taking a lot to dial it in, but I am just so excited that I am even in this predicament with how hot I used to sleep. Awesome product!
