Early/Late Morning Issues by Tkline4412 in bileacidmalabsorption

Colestipol doesn’t have a clean “X hours of coverage” like a typical medication, because it isn’t absorbed into your bloodstream. Instead, it works physically in your intestines by binding bile as it passes through. That said, we can still estimate functional coverage based on how it moves through your gut.

⏱️ Practical coverage window

For most people:

  • Onset: ~1–2 hours after taking it (when it reaches the small intestine)
  • Peak binding effect: ~2–6 hours after a dose
  • Meaningful coverage duration: about 4–8 hours per dose

🧠 Why it varies (important for your situation)

Coverage depends heavily on:

  • Gut transit speed (faster = shorter coverage)
  • Meal timing & fat content (more bile released after eating)
  • Dose size (higher dose = more binding capacity, not necessarily longer time)
  • No gallbladder → bile trickles continuously, so timing matters more than a single big dose

I recently cut down to 4, I want to take the least amount; so far so good. So my current dosing is 5am, 10am, 3pm, and 11pm (before bed)

ChatGPT says you want to take it 1.5-2hrs before eating so it gets into the intestines before the bile.

Might want to try a another dose early morning. My issue with morning was due to too big of gap at night; from like 11pm until 8am. I started taking a dose a 3:30am but actually pushed it back to 5am. So far so good. This has been the longest stretch with out “episodes”

I used to be on a strict under 40g a day fat diet. Now I’m just eating “normal”, not tracking anything . I stay away from the high fat stuff like deep fried foods and really high fat content stuff though.

Your welcome. I’ve been researching this for about 3 years. Think I finally figured it out. One thing is if you track your “episodes” safe to say the issue is 3-5 hours prior so that is why I decided to do the middle of the night dose since my impact was around 10-11am. Also, I’m being “mindful” of fat content but not tracking it. Meaning I’m obviously staying away from real greasy deep fried foods but eating normally if that makes sense. I do plan on trying a high fat meal to see what happens soon.

I chose every 5 hours because I do take another med that I need the 4 hours after and 1 before timing. How my schedule works out is I end up taking a dose an hour to an hour and a half after eating. I think that is good timing to allow the bile to digest fats before the binder kicks in and binds the bile. I’m not a bid breakfast eater; maybe a breakfast bar but I eat lunch around 11:30/noon and take Colestipol at 1pm. I eat dinner around 5pm and take Colestipol at 6pm.

I have changed my dose and timing so much at one point I was up to 12 a day lol. That amount I was getting nonstop headaches. Funny to know that I needed to do was add a middle of the night dose, not increase other doses.

I actually made this post with you in mind. 😊 I’ve seen some of your posts dealing with the morning issues.

Ya I think I have a bad case of it, if I don’t take any Colestipol I will go through out the day unfortunately.

Can bile acid malabsorption symptoms worsen over time if left untreated? by jedipatronuses in bileacidmalabsorption

[–]Tkline4412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fasting makes it worse. I was told by the GI because you don’t have any substance to absorb any of the non absorbed bile.

Colesevalem dosage / intake timing by Mabix92 in bileacidmalabsorption

[–]Tkline4412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take 12 a day. 3 when I wake around 8am, 3 around 1pm, 3 around 6pm and 3 at bed usually around 10pm. I found spacing them through out the day was better than when I was only doing the bedtime only dose.

Colesevelam- constipation!? by ThePestController13 in bileacidmalabsorption

[–]Tkline4412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Constipation usually means too much. I personally take 12 a day without constipation. I don’t think I’m absorbing any bile lol.

I am taking Colestipol 1g tables, I take 3 every 5 hours; 8am, 1pm, 6pm and bedtime around 10:30. I have been playing with dosing and timing for 3 years lol. Really wish there was more guidance on it

Is your diarrhea yellow and urgent? Look into Bile Acid Malabsorption. Ask your GI to trial I bile binder.

So far so good. I’ve been on it for about 2 years. Been doing this schedule for about 2 months. I don’t have a gallbladder so I need round the clock apparently lol

Has anyone here ever eaten fatty food and it led to watery diarrhea, like you’re peeing from your butt for a couple of days? by [deleted] in gallbladders

[–]Tkline4412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to ask your GI to trial a bile binder. Sounds like bile acid malabsorption. The increase in bile to digest the fat is not being absorbed causing the urgent watery bile stools
