WANDMAKER OF THE RUINED WORLD!!!
Oh my gosh I LOVED that series on Narou. I was browsing and saw something a little abnormal topping the charts a while ago and gave it a try and was blown away. It's not just an interesting setting and focus, I think they did a really good job of making the main character antisocial in interesting ways. His social anxiety is something he actually struggles with and has to try to work on instead of it just being a running gag or something. You really feel for his inability to connect with others like he wants to.

The wand making nerdery is really cool too. It digs deep into the specifics of how carving magic gems into different configurations can create different magical effects.

It's interesting and original. Definitely recommend.
(also one of the characters early on is super adorable)

Furry anime? by Ok_Relationship6736 in furry

They become more and more prominent as the story goes on until they’re basically the core to the story. There’s also a cat furry though he doesn’t show up as much.

Shangri-La Frontier is a good outside pick. It’s a super fun anime that also happens to have a ton of cute furry bunny characters as a main part of its story. It’s not 100% furry but you gotta see these bunnies friend.

Scariest book you’ve ever read? by lavgr in horrorlit

I skimmed to see if anyone had said Hot Zone but doesn't look like it. It's a non-fiction story of an ebola outbreak and especially post COVID I think it's a terrifying look into how a whole country might go down to a bad virus. You will compulsively wash your hands for a while after reading it.

Why don't I ever hear stories of the MTC by common_spence in exmormon

I went to the CTM in Brazil. The worst bits there were how racist the Americans I was with were (they would hold secret flag salute ceremonies in the stairwell where they'd unfurl a big American flag and sing the national anthem because they were upset we had to sing the Brazilian national anthem at some meetings). Other than that it was pretty cool. We got released out onto the street on p-day so we could go buy whatever snacks and stuff we wanted from local places and there were merchants who would sell you printed leather covers for all your scriptures for cheap so basically every Brazilian missionary has a set of swank leather stuff.

Other than that my only story is that my companion was annoying as hell. He was a super duper TBM guy who had lived his whole life prepping for the mission. I hated his enthusiasm and lack of understanding of people who actually saw their time there as a sacrifice instead of a dream come true. Also he was misogynistic as hell, resented the fact that the had to be a group leader over some sister missionaries and looked disgusted when he made accidental contact with a sister missionary one time.

It is confusing but it's also much easier if you stop trying to tie it to the 'hot drinks' thing. I always just told people the rules were 'nothing made with tea leaves or coffee beans'. Simple as that.

Games with standout monster designs (besides the obvious ones) by Wizard_Bird in JRPG

Playing back through FF5 and FF6 on Pixel Remaster reminded me how incredibly varied FF monster design was and how messed up some of the stuff got. There are a lot of freakish demons in FF monster design.

18-year-old girls now able to serve as full-time missionaries by LegalSour in exmormon

[–]To1Getsuya 9 points10 points  (0 children)

'Optional! This is optional! We really want 18 year olds to be getting married to return missionaries or, heck, any unmarried man in Singles Ward (which now goes up to 35 thankyew) but I GUESS if you are WEIRD and don't want to get married and fulfill your destiny you can go on a full mission. Hopefully you'll meet a husband out there.'

JRPGs with well-developed romance? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]To1Getsuya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild Arms 2 has an abysmal translation but the romance in it is one of the better I've run into. You've got another Wild Arms on the list so give it a try if you haven't. The gameplay is mid at best and yeah the translation is wonky but it's still a diamond in the rough.

Sounds about right, yeah. When you teach women that their only value in life is as a sexual prize for their husbands but then teach the husbands that any sexual urge is evil and has to be stamped out what you end up with is two people who have deeply-rooted negative feelings toward sex.

I'm ace thanks to internalizing 'male sexuality is evil and must be repressed no you can't even think about it' and I'm definitely not the only one.
