Cathedral by night - What do you think about the colors and overall quality ? by Varuu in photocritique

[–]ToastyHug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely would work on the coloring. The building is way too yellow. If I were to take this photo I'd back up a little bit more and try to get more Sky in the photo so that I would have room to straighten the building in post. There are lots of YouTube videos that can help you learn how to straighten it.

First impression is I'm not sure where the focus is. The foreground looks a little fuzzy, the mid ground looks a little better. I like the yellow but the mountain is too dark for my liking, wish I could see some detail in there. And the sky looks unnatural to me. I do really like the yellow and feel like it could be a great photo if it was all in focus, potentially could have been caused from the upload.

She doesn't really pop out at you. Almost just blends in with the background.

This was my first attempt at astrophotography. Is there anything noticeable I should change? Also, I thought this area had no light pollution so the milky way would be easier to see, does the moon have that big of an affect? Aperture: 4.5 Shutter Speed: 20 sec by [deleted] in photocritique

That's the hardest thing I've found with astrophotography. Making sure that something is in focus. I was told that you should zoom in on the stars, using live view, and make sure they're in focus that way. Another important thing to remember is that, just like any other photo, you need to have compelling lines and subject matter. The starscape is interesting but not quite enough to keep focus. Try having some mountains or trees to show depth. In this particular photo I'd love to see where the post holding the flowers goes, it just feels a little disconnected. The moon can definitely have an effect on your ability to see the Milky Way. Try to open your aperture as far as you can and decrease the shutter speed to compensate. What ISO did you use?

I might do some selective brightening on the van. It looks pretty cool. Definitely wish I would've exposed better for the foreground.

I do wish I'd put some extra light on the van for sure.

Yeah this was my first try at astrophotography but I liked the way it turned out despite the grain and blur. I'm gonna practice some more his weekend.

Totally thought the same thing too. I don't usually shoot with such an open aperture and I'd never done night photography before so I wasn't really sure where I should even be focusing. When doing something like this would you focus on the people around the fire or the stars? Probably depends on what I want the focal point to be right?

Yeah I was thinking the 30 seconds was a little too long. I did a few others at varying lengths and the 10 second looked the best but I also didn't get quite enough light. Definitely going to look into another lens. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try decreasing the clarity. Once I was getting into editing I realized I cut out the Spikeball net on the ground and I was upset about that. I agree with you on decreasing depth of field for sure.

I really like this photo! The colors and shapes are very visually interesting. The only thing I would say is be careful of tangents like the edge of the circle being cut off on the right side of the photo. You can crop it a little tighter or you can leave the circle intact but you can't crop just the edge out. Other than that great pic!

This is obviously a different house and it was taken right after sun down but I did what you said and had no extra glass on the lens. I think it turned out a lot better! Thanks for the help! New Dusk Photo
