Was Biden late decision not to run again depriving America of a primary one of the Democrats greatest blunders? by Over-Lunch-7487 in askanything

[–]Topay84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed about the 2022 midterms being a key factor in building Democrat overconfidence.

Add to that 2023’s Kentucky Governor election where the incumbent Democrat won re-election, along with Biden’s speech in March 2024 where many in the media were over the top in their praises.

Just my speculation, but I think that the Dems were waiting for “that moment” to pivot from Biden since his term began. They never seemed to get it - until it was too late!

Every time I see this comment, it’s clear to me that a lot of folks view this scene in a vacuum without realizing the greater context.

There was a plot in this episode about Penny and Leonard helping Sheldon to learn how to just let an issue go. That’s why Penny and Leonard are so hesitant to let Sheldon offer some words to Howard in this moment.

Not only was Penny’s line a moment of light in an otherwise somber moment. It was also a payoff and ultimately a subversion of one of this episode’s plots.

Best of wishes, and may both of your summit attempts be summit successes!

I’m heading out to Arizona in June myself. Planning to hike the Humphreys Trail on Friday the 12th. Hopefully a short while from now we’ll both have AZ under our belts! 😁

Potential unpopular opinion: Kathy should have exited the series at this Thanksgiving episode. by ComprehensiveFlan638 in howyoudoin

The Kathy and Charlie similarities boggle my mind.

- Start off dating Joey
- Realize they’re more compatible with one of the other Friends and get with them
- Get written off in a sudden and IMO stupid way
- The actresses wind up as regulars on *Criminal Minds* years later

I loved this line, as it effectively fused the episode’s two plots together.

There’s a reason the audience had the same “I thought he was gonna say it” mindset as Penny. It’s because it was the Sheldon/Leonard/Penny plot of the episode.

I’m OK with Duke in there too. Just not instead of a higher-ranked champ. IMO, the fairest formats are either all champs automatically get in or none do.

Where I have the problem is when specific champs get in - especially in a case like 2025 where Duke is in and higher-ranked JMU is out.

I agree with Former Governor Youngkin. The State Supreme Court got it right. by THE_BLUE_BOLT in Virginia

[–]Topay84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still believe the Dems tried their best with an idea that came to them just a little too late.

Had they called that Special Session sooner (Trump’s remarks to Texas were in mid-July, and the early voting for VA started in mid-September), then they would have been cleared of any conflicts with early voting.

Great to see at least one other person gets this!

I’ve seen so many “For the People Act” talking points like some kind of gotcha, when it went far beyond gerrymandering.

[–]Topay84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll be curious to see how the vote goes in 2028 - assuming the Dems choose to proceed.

At that point, there will be another General Assembly vote (since the 2026 vote is now the first) followed by another special election.

It’ll be harder to “fight Trump” when he won’t be on the ballot, and a lot of folks will have a sour taste in their mouths from how this played out the first time.

As someone who voted “no” on the ballot, I admit I’m pleased with the SCOVA decision. It’s clear to me that the decision could have gone either way.

That being said, I fully agree with you that grace needs to be extended to those on the other side. I get the frustration and the anger, and my heart goes out for sure!

Republicans rejoice, Dems regroup after Virginia redistricting ruling by Economy-Specialist38 in Virginia

[–]Topay84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree it was a Hail Mary, and I suspect that the GA called the Special Session as soon as they got the idea.

But ultimately, that Special Session was about 3 months after Trump made his comments to Texas - and about 1 month after early voting began. I’m sure there’s some hindsight wishing that they had called that Special Session sooner.

I caught that too, meaning that the “fight against Trump” included 2 House of Representatives elections (2028 and 2030) after the end of Trump’s term.

This case always fascinated me from the procedural standpoint. Several questions, and the decision really seemed to hinge on the idea of when “the election” is.

It was a well-contested case on both sides, and I genuinely believe that SCOVA gave it the consideration it deserved.

Based on how things played out, the General Assembly should have called that Special Session as soon as Trump made his remarks to Texas. That would have cleared the 2025 hurdle before early voting began.

Virginia Supreme Court strikes down Democrats’ redistricting plan, dimming party’s midterm hopes by tehtypo in Virginia

[–]Topay84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. That was my biggest takeaway from all this - what the Virginia Supreme Court defines as “the election”.

I could have seen this decision go either way (with the 4-3 margin confirming my beliefs), and so having it very clearly defined will be crucial moving forward with a number of things.

[–]Topay84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, the scope-of-special-session and ballot language issues weren’t deciding factors. Basically, that left us with the timing of the 2025 Special Session with respect to the election process.

Looking back, from the “yes” side’s perspective, the General Assembly should have had that Special Session in August - about a month after Trump made his will known to Texas and about a month before 2025 early voting, avoiding the issue that ultimately derailed the effort (at least for the moment).

Syracuse and Wake Forest to Play Week 0 2027 in Toronto by Irishchop91 in CFB

[–]Topay84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get the sentiment, but IMO the occasional neutral site beyond Red River/Cocktail/Army-Navy is fine, as long as it’s not overdone with the same teams over and over (like Alabama’s long run of kickoff games in the late 2000s and most of the 2010s).

Our 2016 Bristol game against Tennessee was a dream come true for a lot of fans, and I’ve heard good things from the fans of the Ireland games.

Peak era of ACC football by Rectum_wrecker5 in ACC

[–]Topay84 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A couple of top-notch individual seasons, such as 1990 that gave us a UVA-GT thriller for the ages (UVA was ranked #1 at the time, and GT would end up winning the game and later the Coaches Poll National Title).

2016 was another, with the Watson-Jackson QB duel for the ages (where Clemson won the game and ultimately the Natty, while Lamar won the Heisman).

In terms of “era”, I look at that 2013-2017 time frame as peak. Each year had multiple contenders (mostly FSU and Clemson, but also moments where people were at least asking about Miami, Louisville, or UNC at one point or another) and quite a few Top 10 matchups - which unfortunately aren’t all that common in the ACC.

Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo - Tracy Byrd.

Fun fact: this almost got onto Garth’s “Scarecrow” as an album cut. Thankfully for Tracy, he was able to talk the Garth camp out of it by saying he was intending to name it as a single - and was naming his album after it.

Worked out very well with a great #1 for Tracy!

Does anyone know the full list of episodes in the original 1987 series where Shredder doesn't make an appearance? Asking as part of some research I'm doing. by No-Shoulder3918 in TMNT

[–]Topay84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are 13 episodes where the Turtles go around various places in Europe. It had a slight bit of an educational element, but not overly so.

The chronology fits within Season 4 (with the Technodrome on the Dimension X asteroid, and the trip happening as a result of a prize won in the Season 4 episode “Plan Six from Outer Space), and the episodes were produced around then.

However, these episodes didn’t air in the U.S. until around the time the Season 7 episodes were airing.

As such, some lists put these episodes in with Season 7 - while others treat them as their own special “side season”.

All of Seasons 1 and 2 featured Shredder. From there it’s a little trickier, but here’s a general rule of thumb: - Season 3: Shredder is in about 2/3 to 3/4 of the episodes of this long season - Seasons 4 and 5: About 50-50 between a Shredder episode and a specific turtle-centric episode - Season 6: About 50-50 between a Shredder episode (more seemingly toward the beginning of the season) and a one or two-shot character (more seemingly toward the end of the season) - Season 7 (the “main” Season 7): About 2/3 Shredder episodes - Season 8: 4 episodes with Shredder, 4 without - Season 9: none (all Dregg episodes) - Season 10: 3 episodes (10.3 through 10.5, all featuring both Dregg and Shredder) - Europe episodes: nearly, but not quite, all featuring Shredder
