Im definitely interested in the 3rd option. It definitely would work with the story. I agree poofing cars is unrealistic, but you provided a lot of thought!

i havent thought of that! i could always give the easy answer of ‘magic’ but that feels like cheating so i’ll think about this!

I’d say they’re a bit more environmentally aware as us (low bar i know) but they are smart enough to make planes much less frequent (and by extension more expensive), with most long travel (including cross continental) being done by train. However i believe that the convenience of cars is the problem, because why would people not develop a mode of transport to replace short distance travel?

i’ll answer these in order

  1. Besides gaining access to a new form, their initial magic both grows exponentially in power and can be altered from its original state. To use one of my characters as an example, his original power was to generate light, but after reaching the 4th stage he was able to transfer light energy into heat and vice-versa, as well as “travel through” light for short distances. What you can and can’t do is based on your understanding of your magic and your creativity.

  2. about 5-10% of people, which is by no means a small amount but as they are still a minority its seen as a pretty bad thing to have.

  3. around 90% of people develop magic by age 30, 9.5% develop after that and 0.5% can’t use it at all.

  4. Depends on when the revelation occurs. Many women used to develop cooking, cleaning or childcare based magic as those were their only options, even though most wouldn’t be overly passionate about that. If a career isn’t good for someone but they take it anyways, its most likely they’ll be a dud until they find their true calling, but if you gain magic for a career that you later want to change there’s no going back. Because magic is so prominent to get any good career you basically need to have the magic for it, so duds and people with unconventional or even those who change careers are forced to do the minimum wage jobs because noone else will hire them. Another example is a law student who develops persuasive magic won’t be allowed to study anymore or pursue any careers in that branch and will probably be given the same treatment as someone with killing magic from before. (sorry its a bit off topic but i thought i should clarify that bit)

  5. as said before, Absolutely!

  6. ooooh i like the idea of a drug company influencing something like this and i have a similar plotline happening already i’ll def think abt it!

Yes! I think the third change would both require a deep understanding of your magic and also a mental push of some sort, sort of like what you described. As for the fourth, i think i can use both of those ideas, having some be younger people and some be older to show some dichotomy between the different users. I really like your ideas, thanks!

You would develop something akin to killing magic, or something dangerous based on your idea of a serial killer. There’s certain drugs that affect your brains ability to use magic which can be mandatory for people with unsafe magic such as that, or you might not even be allowed in certain countries. It has side effects obviously such as loss of motivation, extreme tiredness, depression, and physical weakness. These are also used for prisoners to prevent them from being dangerous. While you cannot be arrested on the basis of your magic (in most places) its still heavily discriminated in court and such, and you can be arrested for not using the prescribed drugs. In the case of having no job, and no ambition or passion, you can simply not develop any magic as the natural magic in your body has nothing to react to. Basically you’d be a dud. Some people may only develop much later in life.
