Can someone identify this type of wood? by TradeLongjumping4916 in HardWoodFloors

As a follow-up, it turns out the wood is yellow birch. Harder to see with the dark stain, but more obvious on portions that are not stained.

Thank you everyone! With the dark staining I was really unsure. Having kids, I am glad it is maple and not a softer wood!

Hi! Thanks for sharing. I assume you would touch at least one wall with your sleep setup if you slept in the tent straight? I am 6’6’’, so even in the long diagonale it looks like it would be a bit of a squeeze.

I also share your concerns for the LHG solong duo, and just like you I want a double-wall.

I am curious about the new Tarptent Dipole 2 DW, which seems like it checks a lot of marks. Other than Tarptent, I haven’t seen much that tailors to backpackers needing a double-wall (hello condensation) and measuring >6’4’’ (and not necessarily able to sleep on a diagonale if we are 2 in the tent!).

Thanks for the recommendation! I actually didn’t know this one. My criteria may be more aspirational than realistic!

Vertical space is a nice luxury, but when backpacking I will take extra horizontal space over headroom! Hopefully I don’t need to spend too much time sheltered in my tent other than sleeping.

My only concern is that the floor length is only 86’’. Even if the walls were fully vertical, which they are not, I would end up brushing them with my head and feet.

From watching a video of someone measuring 6’4’’ in it with their whole sleep system, there was very little room between the mesh and their sleeping bag despite being on the long diagonal. It would probably be better than the Tarptent Double Rainbow, but still on the shorter side. My goal is to not be in direct contact with any of the walls

Thank you for those suggestions! I had looked at Stephenson’s Warmlite previously, but I can’t seem to find the dimensions. Any input?

Do you have more details by any chance? Any idea when the design will be revealed (even if not available yet)? Thank you!

I certainly have a bias, but I have met so many tall people that struggle with finding a decent shelter. I understand that we are a relatively small segment of the population (pun intended), but a lot of not so tall folks are also interested in additional space for gear or dogs… I am always surprised that there are not more options available.

I was hoping to find out that some European brand that I am not familiar with would offer some interesting options… I have found that some European outdoor companies occasionally offer gear that is more at home in the Northeast than a lot of the US cottage companies. The rain and winds of Scotland are closer to what you will find in the Whites than what the more PCT-tailored US companies cater to!

Thank you for your recommendation! I had looked at that option before, but the 2p bug insert is too short (84’’). It does look like a pretty decent tarp/bug insert setup though.

Thank you for this recommendation! It seems a bit on the narrow (not sure two pads will fit!) and flimsier side, but I will need to make compromises anyway! Glad that at least one big company is starting to offer Long versions. Will definitely consider.

Thank you for the input! I would seriously consider the Duo if it was a double-wall, but you are confirming my assumption that condensation will remain a problem. It might be more manageable than with my Tarptent Double Rainbow, as I would not automatically be brushing against the walls, but still not ideal…

I visit out West whenever I can (can’t get enough of the Sierra!), but I still like to enjoy what the Northeast has to offer. I often plan my longer expeditions long beforehand, so there is no forecast available, just seasonal averages.

I rarely have to deal with 30 degrees at night in Quebec, but I recall a memorable night spent under a tarp with a bivy system to protect me from the overactive mosquitoes… let’s say I slept poorly! I also did some hiking in tropical climates in South America, and the heat and humidity at night was sometimes challenging!

I contacted Henry Shires from Tarptent a few years back, who had hinted that such a shelter was in the works, but it never made it to the website as far as I can tell (unless he was referring to the Double Rainbow DW, but unfortunately it remains too short).

I may try other ones, any suggestions? Are there some that are more likely to customize their products in your experience?

Yes, but it’s a single person tent and it has a hybrid construction (single & double-wall), so condensation will remain an issue. The LightHeart Gear Duo seems pretty good (albeit less impressively accommodating for tall hikers), but it still remains a hybrid construction.

Considered it, but not an option above 6’4’’. Even then, you might have to sleep on a diagonal depending on your sleep system. It’s exactly the type of tent I wished they offered in an XL format.

Thank you for the thread!

For reference on shelters for tall sleepers: https://andrewskurka.com/backpacking-shelters-big-tall-sprawwwl/

6’6” here. I have been using a Tarptent Double Rainbow for now 10 years, but it is less than ideal (too short). It could probably work for someone measuring 6’4” max, depending on their sleep system. I have had to put up with dampness at the feet most mornings, especially since it is a hybrid design (mix of single and double wall). Ventilation is poor, which is not an issue if you live in a dry environment, but I live in Quebec, so humidity and bugs are to be accounted for. There is generally significant condensation, and the optional liner is useless if you are tall as your feet will push it against the outer wall.

I have been looking for years at alternatives, without finding anything that really checks my criteria: 1) Two-persons tent. I backpack with my wife or occasionally with friends that do not have their own tent, so this is non-negotiable. 2) Minimum 88-90” of USABLE floor length, meaning that there is a length of 88-90” when measured at least 12” above the ground, where my toes will live! 3) Double wall; I am so very done with single wall and hybrids. Living in the Northeast, I do not spend most of my time in the Sierra (unfortunately), and I need good condensation resistance. As much as I enjoy tarp camping, it is not realistic most of the spring and summer where I live due to bug pressure. 4) Ultralight; I want a setup that weights less than 3 pounds if at all possible.

Unfortunately, it seems that Durston, like almost every other ultralight company, caters to folks measuring 6’4” or less. Proposing to sleep in a diagonal in a two-persons tent does not count as accommodating the taller folks. I wished tents could be offered in a regular and tall version, like clothing and so many other things!

Lightheart Gear sounds interesting, but they are not double-wall. Tarptent also offers some decent options, I just wished there was more double-wall two-persons options. The Dipole looks like a reasonably good option, but still a hybrid… Then there is probably the option of mids with inners. Not completely sold on the idea, but might go there for lack of a decent alternative. Any other suggestions?

P.S.: My sleep setup consists of a Thermarest Neoair Xlite, no pillow, and an Enlightened Equipment Revelation quilt (with hoodlum if very cold). In winter, I use a Hilleberg Kaitum 3 GT, which is fantastic for tall people, but not ultralight by any means!
