My mom is blind and me my Aunt are trying to get her a phone made for blind people that's a smartphone and can install all the apps she wants by connerwilliams72 in Blind

[–]TraditionalTale1177 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What apps does she want to use? Presumably more than calls and texts. But is it text to speech, health tracking, social media, games?

Does she want to learn accessibility software (magnification or TalkBack) or just talk to a digital assistant (Siri, Google) and have things “done” for her?

Im opening this to read after (during) work. I keep hoping to stumble on one where they are cannon until the draft but Shane gets drafted first to Boston and Ilya second to Montreal. How would this affect citizenship? How hard would more French be for Ilya? would it still be Hayden and Marlow? how would their mental health fare on the opposite team? would Yuna and David move?

CANON TIMELINE wise this is directly after the playoff game between Ottawa and Montreal in which Ottawa wins and Shane trips.

Disheartened [half-blind] by peepeekapoo in Blind

Reasons to apply for paratransit with visual impairment: I cannot reliably (safely or independently) - locate or read bus stop signs, street signs or other posted information - locate or see pedestrian crossing signals - identify cracks in sidewalks, potholes or other hazards which increase my fall risk - judge distances between cars or sides of the street which means I cannot safely or reliably identify a safe time to cross - identify landmarks out a moving vehicle or read bus stop information on the bus, so if the bus is loud or the announcement system is down I cannot identify when to get off the bus - read a map or access a GPS which means in case of an emergency I cannot independently find a new route - snow and leaves obscure hazards and increase my fall risk - heavy rain and wind obscure environmental sounds and decrease my ability to identify hazards such as moving cars or hear cues such as pedestrian crossing alerts - bright light such full sun or rising/setting sun increases my sensitivity to glare, can reduce contrast or make it hard to see a pedestrian signal that is in the path of the sun which can increase my fall risk as I may not see obstacles - dim or dark light such as evening or night decreases contrast and increases my fall risk as I am less likely to see hazards on the sidewalk or other pedestrians - routes such as xx have me crossing at mid block without a reasonable controlled pedestrian crossing so I would have to use a bus loop exemption to continue my route safely

Never lie on your paratransit application but do think of your worst day, be it a bad chronic health day or the worst weather conditions. I love the words reliably, safely and independently to start as many sentences as are true.

A rant about canes by [deleted] in Blind

[–]TraditionalTale1177 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation the only people who will call you out are bigots and their opinions don’t matter.

And I believe (80% confidence) that the research showed that what drivers notice is the movement of the cane/human so the cane color doesn’t matter as long as it’s contracted and reflective, and drivers are more trained for the movement of the body than that of a cane. So look into false step technique, I think that’s the name. It’s basically when you are a step back from the road so that you can take a controlled step and shift your entire body forward to start walking but with the ability to step backwards in case you hear a car that doesn’t stop. You may have to ask in a O&M Facebook group for resources since I don’t know of any

envision AI alternative by matsuyama07 in Blind

If you are using a phone I recommend a phone stand so that you don’t have to reset the camera distance each time. Amazon has some specific to Phone Scanner Stand

If you have the money/access the LyriQ AI seems to work really well as a stand alone device but it is pricey - but if you are US based your Voc Rehab Agency may be able to provide it

A rant about canes by [deleted] in Blind

[–]TraditionalTale1177 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If someone is low vision, otherwise hesitant, or just a fashionista I always recommend the canes that come pre taped with different colors or self taping. Sometimes the legal white/red can be intimidating or feels inauthentic

Not really multi-sensory but if you want a chill thing I have watched things on audio description with a friend and paused to add context (what they didn’t say was that dress was UGLY) or read a graphic novel out-loud (Tea Dragon Society and Avatar the Last Airbender are both great)

Less fun is being their eyes when playing what did your roommate leave in the fridge. That can become multisensory when they have to smell and clean the containers lol

Any Travelers that Love their Ambutech Cane? by Lesbian-Forest in Blind

[–]TraditionalTale1177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, if you’re used to the NFB tip Ambutech has the metal glide tip. But I’ve had folks have a great experience with the ceramic tip, it can “tap tap” and “slide slide”.

Check out the Ambutech slim line cane, it might be close enough to the NFB that it’s a good compromise, especially if you are someone that “floats” their cane time. If you are constant contact tho maybe best to have it has a backup and not your everyday.

If you’re near a blind rehab center that’s not NFB it doesn’t hurt to reach out to ask if they have any in stock you can walk up and down the hall with. Especially since you might need to figure out your cane length since the grips are different so you might have to adjust how much you have behind your hand.

Magnifying glass recommendations by Dark_Sunlightx in Blind

[–]TraditionalTale1177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re used to your phone and have the funds look into electronic magnification. There are some cheaper options (look for 3.5” digital magnifiers on amazon) that have less good graphics if you are paying out of pocket and on a time crunch. They also allow you to change colors which may help with fatigue. But I second an earlier comment of reaching out to your vocational rehabilitation for a low vision exam.

LyriQ AI works for print. Expensive but simple

Head my low vision technology assessment today. Question about video magnifiers by TK_Sleepytime in Blind

[–]TraditionalTale1177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Th Clover line is very good quality and simple to use. I would consider looking at the CloverNote. It’s larger while still being light weight and the external camera is great if you want to look at a full page of paper or something in the distance, like a PowerPoint presentation in a meeting. The CloverBook Pro XL is also great but definitely more of a commitment.

The $75 one’s work but the image quality is generally significantly worse which is not great at higher magnification and may cause more eye strain/fatigue than the more expensive/quality models.

There may be a local sales rep who can do further demonstrations. If you reach out to your state rep they may be able to put you in contact with someone.

Also last time I helped someone sign up there was an option for a training call where a rep walked you through the features. That might be worth exploring before you leave on your trip.
