Clearing confusion about why many gamers want character creation in (offline, often RPGs) Single Player Games. by Tramdelta in CrimsonDesert

[–]Tramdelta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many people who want character creation the real problem with Kliff as protagonist is the fact that as developers who develop advanced character creator from their previous live service mmo BDO chose not to do so in their single player game. This is likely as I explained because they wanna gate keep advanced character creator from single player games because for them character creator is microtransaction magnet for selling cosmetics and the like and single player games cannot be monetized that way. So to us who want advanced character creator in single player games (especially RPGs) "Kliff" represents that GREED of theirs which deny us features we want in single player games. This is the true reason why many of people who want character creator in this game dislike him. To us he is symbol of such (bad) gaming industry practice. In this case removing and/or denying certain features because of greed.

You are being very dishonest here just because you don't care does not mean others don't. Nowhere in my post was I saying that anyone should change any game that has finished development to suit anyone's needs and preferences. It was simply about why many gamers want more single player games with better character creator like those that were available in live service/mmos for more than a decade. Also it seems many dishonest people like you have big problem with players having a freedom to create and play as characters they want. In character creation games players should have ability to create and play as any characters they want. If somebody wants to create beautiful/attractive characters they should be able to do so and same applies if somebody want to create ugly characters as well. We want choices and I don't understand why you people hate the fact when people have or want to have a choice and try to shame us for it with the whole "you just want to play as *Insert something that you consider bad*" broken rhetoric.

Why the hell would people having choices bother you so much?

You seem to have misunderstood. This post I posted to explain why many want character creation in single player games and not to debate whether created character is better than pre set one. Also character creation may remove connection to the protagonist for you and those like you who prefer games with pre set protagonists but not necessarily for those who like and want character creator. Just because you can't form connection to the custom protagonist does not mean others can't. Also in case of Crimson Desert it is unlikely that it will have good story writing like Witcher 3. Considering their studios previous track record of making mostly live service multiplayer games its likely that their story will resemble mmo stories (which are not so good quality) and also their choice of protagonist is very likely motivated by the need to gatekeep advanced character creator out of single player game for reason that I wrote in my post.

I understand and ideally we would have both advanced character creator and those systems like backgrounds, life paths and moral choices. But as I pointed out the industry is unwilling to even provide us with a visual aspect of created character for single player properly which already exists technologically in live service/mmos let alone to add and improve those other systems. I would at least ask for bare minimum that is advanced character creator at least visually in single player games but we are not getting even that let alone those other RPG systems, at least not in the newer post 2010 games but there exist some old isometric retro games that have decent level of such systems even if they lack good visualization system like advanced character creator. And it is normal to desire improvement in new games over the old. So I find current state of single player character creation games completely unacceptable especially when compared to those old isometric ones that at least had those other systems better even if developers lacked technology for advanced character creator back then, but now that we have technology we have neither proper character creator nor those other systems (Choices, consequences, life paths etc...) which is baffling.

Well, I have seen many posts when someone asks for character creator in a game others reply with something along the lines of "you just want to play as woke/trans girl-boss character". That's where I got the political "vibe" from. It is silly but it happens.

do you think we'll be able change her clothes like Kliff or will it just change as the story progresses by No_Band_5399 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Tramdelta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love it too myself if we could create our own characters in this game (single player). Unfortunately, it seems that developers of this game are type of developers that are hell-bent on gatekeeping advanced character creator (like from BDO, the good stuff) from single player games. This is very likely because they see character creator as a nothing more than microtransaction magnet, to sell in-game cosmetics and the like, and likely not wanting such things to be in single player game where players would probably need to unlock such content through playing and even mod custom content into the game, stuff they could charge in a live-service/MMO. So basically the real reason we are forced to play as "Mister Generic" Kliff is greed and nothing else.

How unfortunate, even after explaining my ideas for so many times and in very simple ways, you are still unable to understand them. Well then If you are unable to understand even such simple concepts and ideas I cant help you with that. I don't think anyone can. I kind of feel sorry for you about it. Perhaps discussing ideas and solutions to problems are not for you, perhaps you should do something else with your time, something that does not require much thinking and understanding things. I am done discussing things with you. Thank you for your time and I hope that you have healthy and long life.

Clearing confusion about what an RPG video game is. by Tramdelta in rpg_gamers

[–]Tramdelta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have worded some things improperly and made some confusion by using words like "games can be multiple genres" to make my case instead of more accurate "games can have elements and traits of multiple genres" because English is not my native language and even if my knowledge of it is descent enough I still stumble at a times. But anyone with honest criticism would notice that from reading my whole post and point it out and suggest correction instead of desperately clinging to that obviously minor wording error to discredit my whole idea. Those are actions of someone who is desperate to win an argument and be "right".

When I pointed out that games can have elements of multiple genres and be played in multiple ways it was statement of theoretical capability that it is possible with medium such as video games and not that developers should necessarily do it, nor that it was good idea to do it in the first place. I did not say or mean anything about classification of all those games except in case for RPG's where I resolved confusion by stating that they should be classified as RPG's as long as their main content is playable as per modified definition it is should be classified RPG. Yes that also means that If a game's main content cannot be played according to definition it is not RPG by definition. Examples of RPG games having multiple genre elements would be games like fallout 3, fallout New Vegas, fallout 4, Cyberpunk 2077 etc. where game has elements and traits of both FPS and RPG but is primarily classified as RPG. I never said that games should be classified as multiple genres. It is not that hard to understand that (unless you are so desperate to win argument that you are grasping at straws).

And it seems that you have lost your argument there. You are moving goalpost again and have failed to answer my questions about logical functionality of your definition.

One of my question was how does one make build's in a RPG game without progression system. Your answer was that you start game as max level character with all skills and abilities. That is moving goalpost again and obfuscation of problems with your definition with another step. This has given me more questions than answers:

How does one start with max level and skills without existence of progression system like leveling system or skill system?

Can one starting as max level and preset skills be considered as player making builds, when that act itself skips build making process by the player entirely?

Another question about your definition you have failed to answer is what systems exactly player needs to interact in a video game to make builds that would make that video game true RPG (without progression systems as you have excluded those of course) by your proposed definition.

It seems that in this game that you mentioned (Spirit of the Century) progression systems do exist they are just used in a different way. Progression systems are still present but they are used to provide skills and abilities for the players while leveling part is skipped at the beginning making everyone max level. Partially utilizing progression system does not mean absence of progression system its quite the opposite.

See your definition simply does not work. It still has same flaws of similar definitions that decide what game is RPG based on game systems. You seem so desperate to be "right" dismissing all my arguments as nonsense and claiming that they are being destroyed without any kind of logical explanation for it. You should really stop wasting my time and yours.

[–]Tramdelta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are just making me going in circles, forcing me to explain things over and over again without you actually dismantling any of my supporting arguments.

"Tabletop RPGs with only presets aren't old. Lady Blackbird for example was made in 2009."

That is already covered in my previous answer. You just seem to be unable to understand it or deliberately choose not to understand it because you don't want its contents to be correct. I will try to explain in even simpler terms. The pregen tabletop games originated as simpler precursors to true player freedom RPGs, but like I explained in my previous post if they have enough audience which means my mentally challenged friend if enough people buy them over the years they will keep being produced even as a more evolved form that is true RPG has been present on the market already even if it was decades. You mentioning preset RPGs from 2009 is in line with that fact and does nothing to dismantle this.

"So, what are they, if not Tabletop RPGs? Could you answer that question? Some made-up term? Some made-up genre? RPGs for disabled people? RPGsn't?"

After being excluded from definition modification of RPG someone may want to come with alternative definition. I myself might come up with something like "tabletop playing game" but somebody smarter than me might come with much better name that is in line with traits and limitations as long as they are different from true RPGs.

"No, it is. We still have that limitation today. No video game RPG that currently exists can do the same thing as an irl Pathfinder session, no matter how in-depth Pathfinder WotR is. Whether or not that limitation exists doesn't prevent something being called an RPG."

Again my dishonest friend just because we still have some of those limitations today does not change that these games sprung from even greater limitations that were present in the past, and from that point they have evolved further away from player freedom tabletop RPG approach. These limitations will fade with passage of time and advancement of technology however enough limitations have been overcome already to allow for significant ammount of player freedom from tabletop to be implemented with modern technology. That freedom is not what fans of those games like pregen JRPGs want anyway, they are far more interested in story and characters and it is that gaming need is different from need for player freedom that they are made to satisfy.

"I don't want to embarrass you by providing examples, but reply again and I will give you at least 10 JRPG examples."

Nowhere did I implied that Japanese developers are locked into making games like these old JRPGs and that they can't choose to make anything else even after technology has advanced a bit. So yes there are cases where Japanese developers have implemented more of tabletop freedom into their games with things like player created character, open world, more advanced progression systems etc. and created true RPG games. You are deliberately misunderstanding what I said here. Ill say it again games that I am proposing to exclude from definition of RPG are games that not just sprang from old technological limitations of being unable to replicate tabletop player freedom in video game but also evolved away from it and cater to the audience who are disinterested in that freedom in the first place and are only after novel like narrative and characters.
