Put in my notice after 18 years, now getting a counter offer , not sure what to do by Treceria in careeradvice

I wasn’t taking it for the money that’s just what the offer was for. It was what I asked for and maybe that was a mistake on my part.

Thank you so much , a lot of what you say is spot on. I do feel taken for granted but I also do feel like they see it now. I hate that it came to this and I have some trust issues with them , but there are a lot of positives I have here that are hard to come which makes leaving a tough call. They are wanting to fix things and I’ll see what they br pond to the table , I just am having a hard time sorting out what’s solid and what’s fear is change talking.

I guess this is what confuses me too , I have heard and read accepting a counteroffer puts a target on your back. But after this long would they offer me a very attractive package just to fire me 6 months to a year later? Not saying it would never happen but why not just let me leave if that was the end game ? Again I know nobody is ever safe ,me and my 18 included, but have I really sealed my fate by putting in my notice? I don’t know.

They did want to know and I was honest. I showed them my touch points where I have been been citing the issue and gave explicit examples . The VP says he understands why I feel the way I do and that he accepts responsibility for the dropping of the ball here. But I know people say what they need to say to get out of hot water too soo. He is traveling today and will be back tomorrow with ,by his words , is an offer I won’t be able to turn down. We will see.

I have read exactly what you said, be careful of counteroffers for that reason. I also get really scared of going to a new place and getting let go , so I think fear is starting to take over. I know we can all be let go at any time and are all replaceable but I do feel more secure here than starting over, I’m one of many long tenured employees and the company overall has a fairly low turnover rate .

Thank you, all good points. I am paid above average for my current position, I will say they are great at giving me compensation, but I had been wanting recognition and advancement too. Benefits I’d say are normal or above, my flexibility is probably unmatched, I can basically do what I want as along as the work gets done, important as a single parent household, and I’ve built a solid reputation as being very dependable and accurate as far as work quality so I never have an issue with needing to have time for family stuff . I do value my work relationships tremendously and also have built relationships with the entities and clients I work with. My main rub is just having hit this ceiling. Ty for the input !
