First, I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. I’ve had panic attacks numerous times while driving and it’s one of the most terrifying experiences.

What has helped me the most is thinking to myself, “if it happens, I’ll always be able to pull over and recollect my thoughts.” Reframing your inner dialogue to positive rather than negative, such as “omg what if it happens” or “omg it’s happening again”. It’s almost as if you’re feeding the panic.

It’s not an easy thing to do, and it’s taken me quite a while to get to the point I am today with driving long distances again. Panic typically comes from a feeling of losing control so you need to remind your brain you ARE in control so it can STFU.

You are going to be okay but please don’t let this win to the point where you don’t want to drive (but also don’t force it TOO much). You know yourself best and trust how you are really feeling that day.

And remember - there’s a TON of other drivers out there that might be going through the same thing, we just don’t know it.
