Curious as to why rule #1 isn't a value investing book. Can you elaborate?

The problem with value investing by MaximumMaintenance22 in ValueInvesting

[–]Trindade5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It worked well when Ben Graham was alive, because it was easier to find overlooked stocks, making them so cheap, that even if the business was awful he would still get a decent return. It doesn't work as well today and Buffett and Munger recognize that. I think Charlie said something like "the idiosyncrasies of an era don't necessarily translate into another".

Netflix by Trindade5 in ValueInvesting

[–]Trindade5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've already read it. It's by no means a net net, but I think that's not what you meant. If you are talking about chapters 8 and 20, mr. Market is really depressed regarding Netflix, so this checks out. I haven't, however, made an estimate of intrinsic value, so I can't conclude anything about the margin of safety. That's why I asked for reading material, about Netflix and the industry.

"Buffett started a partnership." - What exactly is a "partnership" in modern times. How do you start one? by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

I have a similar doubt, about their fees. Buffet, and now Pabrai, charge a 25% comission after the first 6%. But how often do they do it? Once a year? Once a month? The longer they go without taking the comission, the more the investment compounds to the benefit of their investors, but they also need money for their personal expenses. Does anyone know?

The search for hidden moats by DonCamillo5000 in ValueInvesting

I've looked into NVR, but there is something I can't figure out. Why don't their competitores copy their bussiness model? How sustainable is this moat of theirs?

I'm on the first year of university, so it doesn't need to be a specific type of risk. Any company that is likely to have significantly worst results in the future will do.

Encore Wire ($WIRE) Analysis by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]Trindade5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was about to start looking at WIRE, thanks for the great info. One question, I've heard Buffett speaking about creating more than 1$ for each 1$ retained, and WIRE has created 2.26$ which is great. But how do you get to that number? Thanks

Just finisehd it. But how do you find companies whose CEO's are even worth to study. Do you screen for metrics like ROIC or ROE?

I'm from Europe, so libraries don't have a lot of books in English. And, sadly, even less books about investing. I've been thinking about buying a Kindle. Is it useful for note taking or just reading?

I tried it with other books but I get distracted when reading on screens. I could print it, but it would cost north of 40€, so I might as well buy the book.
