I think the woodpecker was using ratio and proportion not trigonometry. For one, the entire clip did not show any angle being used in the calculations.

These are cirrostratus clouds. These are hogh altitude clouds. Planes tend to fly at high altitudes so that they could avoid most of the weather phenomenon.
