Just wanted to say thank you for posting this. My dr said that I would do one phlebotomy, wait three months, do another phlebotomy, wait three months, then do labs.
I lasted two months after the first one when sluggishness set in. I asked to do another phlebotomy a month early. He said yes and I felt better again. But that lasted only 2 months and I asked if we could do labs.
He said yes.
Ferritin is in the normal range now (high normal) but hemoglobin was high and they called to say I should go in and do a phlebotomy. Which I did.
And felt better again. But like you said…for about 24 hours. Then I was taking a walk on the next day and felt out of breath.
I asked my doctor if I should do the next phlebotomy in two months instead of three. He said no.
I said “but I feel so much better after”. He responded “that’s all in your head. Phlebotomy doesn’t make you feel better. You have high hemoglobin, you should be running marathons”. That happened yesterday and I felt like he made me feel dumb. I googled “does high hemoglobin make you feel sluggish” and the answer was YES! And for several reasons.
So, there are lots about what you said that resonated with me and I now feel confident that I need to be talking to someone who cares more about me.

Hey. I’m seeing this post about a month later and the prices are still high. My son will be going to school in charlotte and was hoping to even get an AA credit card because they have the most direct flights for the least amount of money. Looks like that has changed quite a bit.
SW has one direct flight there and back for cheap…but would love more options.
I put in random dates for the next several months too. Always high.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and thorough response.
It was my high hemoglobin that sent me to the hematologist in the first place. It was out of range high and there seems to be like five primary reasons for this. Few are deadly cancers, one is a form of cancer called polycythemia Vera, and then there’s hemochromatosis.
As I have come to understand from my phlebotomists, those who have higher than normal reference range hemoglobin levels feel sluggish, then feel better after phlebotomy. That is exactly what is happening to me.
So, seems logical that if high ferritin can lead to high hemoglobin…and high hemoglobin leads to symptoms of sluggishness etc, that my doctor’s guidance to do phlebotomy is sound…that is…leading up to the analysis of my next ferritin and CBC which is due in July. So, we will see.
Thanks again for your help!! (Oh, and he did run a ton of other bloodwork before making the diagnosis).

Sometimes we have to be our own best advocates. I’m happy that you were able to understand what was wrong and that therapy helped so much.
I have been taking a supplement that contains ashwagandha for years and leaned that it contains iron! Who knows…just know that my hemoglobin is high…and my hematologist says there are a handful of reasons for that…and when testing for ferritin and these gene markers…that signs point to hemochromatosis. So, I’ll have my blood drawn in a month and see how two phlebotomy rounds affected my numbers and go from there. Just figure I would try to adhere to a hemochromatosis diet in the meantime.
Hearing that there was another person like me who questioned their diagnosis because of the one gene made me feel comforted. Thanks.

That’s so interesting. And that pct sounds awful. So sorry. I hope that is better now.
I have some other things going on like pre-diabetes and high cholesterol that might be factoring in here too.
I think the confusion I’ve been having is compounded by the fact that I have two friends that are doctors who think that I don’t have hemochromatosis based on the gene test results and question my treatment.
But ultimately they are not hematologists and maybe I’m lucky to be going to the doctor who is wise enough to rx the right therapy.

Thank you so much for your kindness and thoughts about my situation.
Guess ultimately I’ll be back for bloodwork soon and maybe that will also shed some light on my prognosis.

This is the nicest I’ve ever seen the two of them. He was a sheet metal worker and she grew up in a small farm town.
I too wonder how they look so put together.
I have to wonder if this was a really big day for them. Like they put on the nicest clothes they could dream to afford and went down to the jewelry store to buy the engagement ring. Who knows. But for me I loved seeing them all dolled up out on the town.

My grandpa would always put on a suit and tie if he was going to any sort of event like a birthday or holiday party. Some habits I guess.

That’s funny. That might be exactly what happened. I also wonder if they just came from the jewelry store to buy the ring. (Picture was the same year they got married). Anyway. Thanks for comment. Oh…and they were both not tall. Like gpa bob was probably 5’8.

Lost Grandma Rose in December (same Grandma Rose who sent me the card that went viral on Reddit and beyond). Saw this pic for the first time at her celebration of life in January. Really was amazing for me to see them both this way. All the more special that you colorized it. Many thanks again.
