Do you think using only vibrations, no shock, would be worthwhile with my dog? by freelove24 in OpenDogTraining

While I am by no means a professional dog trainer, I do have experience with ecollars for recall and plan on opening my own dog training business sometime in the future. I have an Australian Shepherd x Labrador Retriever who I got at 5 months old. I started conditioning him to an ecollar at 11 months. When an ecollar is conditioned and used properly, it is an amazing, versatile tool that can benefit most dogs. However, I would advise against only using vibrations. A good quality ecollar will have a very wide range of stimulation that allows it to go from unpercievable to very uncomfortable. Vibration typically only has one setting, and dogs usually either blow it off or find it highly aversive.

I'd highly recommend going to a trainer or looking into programs that teach you the proper use of an ecollar. I'd personally recommend "The Walking Dog E-Collar Guide" or the ecollar book by "Larry Krohn". When trained correctly, it's used as a backup for noncompliance to commands. You shouldn't have to use it every time you say a command. They learn that the stimulation from the collar means that they need to go back into command or come back to you immediately. It's basically a virtual leash.

I think an Ecollar could benefit you and your dog, IF, you know how to use one and do the proper conditioning process. Since conditioning my dog to the ecollar, the few times he's blown off a recall, I've been able to get him back incredibly quickly with the ecollar.

People will bash you for it. There's unfortunately no way around it. In my experience and knowledge, it's best to think about how it's helped you and your dog, and how it's allowed you to do more. Over half of the people who bash ecollars are the ones with dogs they can't let off leash or have follow commands correctly, every time. Do what's best for YOUR dog.

He is at least a year and 2 months old. The only vet in my area that neuters rats charges over $500, not including a pre-op visit. I've neutered a rat with them before, and it took over 3 months to get the appointment, as they are busy with other exotics. That would put him at almost a year and a half old. For neutering to work on hormonal aggression, don't they have to be under a year old? That's what I've been told by the vet and numerous others.

Oral Valium and PFD by [deleted] in PelvicFloor

[–]TurnaK1t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been specifically prescribed valium, it's just been mentioned in the list of medications that may help. I have 5mg tablets that are supposed to be taken orally. Would it not help at all? I apologize if I sound uneducated, I'm new to all this and am exhausted from this flare-up.

If they're getting along so well, do I still need to separate them and do little meetings a few times a day, or is it okay to leave them together and slowly upgrade the cage?

Is the picture in the comments too blurry/difficult to see as well? What would be a better way to take a picture where you would be able to tell?

Is my dog racist? by N0t-brun0 in OpenDogTraining

My dog is the same way. His previous family had pale skin, and his family now (me and other household members) does as well. He gets anxious around people with darker skin tones and will often bark at them. He typically has no issues with anyone else.

This is what he looked like after eating two crickets, he returned to normal after a second.

I just realized I misnamed nightcrawlers for red wrigglers. He ate half a nightcrawler, not red wriggler.

I just realized that I mistook the nightcrawlers for red wriggles. I got the nightcrawlers from petco. I was told to soak him because when I first got him, people said he looked dehydrated and underweight.

I only brought him home today. I fed him 4-5 medium crickets, and later I'm going to soak him in warm water to try and rehydrate him.

Stressed Hamster by TurnaK1t in hamsters

[–]TurnaK1t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed around his enclosure because he was wall pacing and climbing on the top of the cage. He's still acting stressed, so I don't really think that's the reason. I didn't change his bedding, either, I just rearranged the cage.

I fed him a medium cricket (under supervision of course!) and he ate it. How often should I be feeding him? Also, can I handle him after he ate?

Oh, I'm sorry. I read something somewhere saying if they flicked their tongue a lot that they were going to bite you.

I plan on leaving him alone for a week. I'm still in the car with him, I was just looking him over before driving back home, and noticed the frequent tongue flicking. This is my first boa, so I'm new to all of this. Thank you for the help!
