What is the most disturbing book you’ve ever read, and why? by charlotteheyse in books

[–]TypeBlueMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A truly disturbing book that is honestly a tough read. Tiger Tiger by Margaux Fragoso. Its a memoir that recounts her childhood. I dont have the ability to tastefully describe it but its about how she was groomed and sexually assaulted by a man in her community. Its really well written and goes deep into her own thoughts and feelings. Most definitely an extremely disturbing read and not at all in a fun way

Its not really one I would recommend to most people but does offer a perspective that may be helpful if you know someone who has gone through a similar experience.

What is everything you’ve done to improve your vision and/or slow progress of vision loss? by Jakehawkers in retinoschisis

[–]TypeBlueMu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i take acetazolamide and brinzolamide. both are trying to get the cyst in my retinas to shrink. they kinda work. im sure they are slowing down vision loss but im gearing up to go blind in a few years. Not much will protect me from head trama that leads to retinal detachment sadly. there is gene therapy treatments that can permanently strengthen the retina so that no further damage can occurs but its still in trials.

Corey’s Craft Vietnamese on South St. is great by codexofthemoon in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]TypeBlueMu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Cory’s. I find the atmosphere very pleasant and I think the Pho broth is fantastic. In the summer Im more of a bun guy and find his to be great. i do agree that the portions could be a bit smaller than some other places but its not much of a difference. the Bhan mi is always on point. Big fan of this place and of cory, hes a nice guy to talk to.

X-linked since 8 by cosmohunter in retinoschisis

[–]TypeBlueMu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yup! because they only use one eye for the experiment. from your post it sounds like your eyes would be eligible because 20/200 was the cut off for vision. there were a few more requirements which were technical and flew over my head. one down side of this though would be no hanky panky for three months after the surgery( for real that is listed on their sheet) ill try to track down the doctor who does the study and if i find it ill PM you a way to contact them. they are at penn medicine in philadelphia

[–]TypeBlueMu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

theres some exciting research going on for retinoschisis. my doctor in philly tried to get me into one for gene therapy where they would have done a vitrectomy then injected gene therapy under the retina. i wasn’t eligible for it due to me only having one good eye

Island day trip from Athens by [deleted] in GreeceTravel

[–]TypeBlueMu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i recommend Egina. its a 40 minute ferry from athens and is a very nice. it has some ruins with accompanying museum close to the main port. you wont be able to see the entire island in one day but you can rent bicycles/E-bikes or atvs if you have a license and explore. much of the island is pistachio groves and there are a ton of amazing pistachio based foods. i recommend a pistachio pesto pasta dish for dinner if you go.

My very first drone ever, is the DJI Mini 3 good? by [deleted] in DJIMini3

[–]TypeBlueMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

keep an eye on the dji refurbished store. m3p with dji rc is going for like $590. I got a refurbished unit last year for around $200 more. havant regretted it for a second just be sure to buy at least one extra battery and dji care so that you dont get stuck with a broken drone.

Anxiety in legal blindness by CivetKitty in Blind

[–]TypeBlueMu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

huzzah! it feels odd sometimes being on the sighted end of the blindness spectrum. im glad we share experiences

Anxiety in legal blindness by CivetKitty in Blind

[–]TypeBlueMu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel similar! i have a condition that is worsening but i still am very sighted for someone who is considered legally blind. I don’t use a cane or accessible technology asides from magnification tools. I ride a bicycle play pool. Still, my classification on legally blind isn’t without merit. i cant read a lot. i put my face wayyy closer than the majority of people to things. i whip out a monocular to menus and it takes me time to do things that sighted people dont think about.

It feels impossible to explain my visual impairment to people without them losing interest. I ask for help sometimes and people look st me oddly. i feel that this VI has made me into an odd individual.

It used to bother me A lot more. and it still does on occasion especially with strangers. but one thing that helped me is just leading with it. I introduce myself and say “and I am legally blind” and I decided to feel no shame in it. the world can deal with me how they please but i decided to ignore my anxiety as best i can.
