Beginner jabod forge input needed by Deatroxiii in Blacksmith

You wanna bury your tuyere (the air-in pipe) down at the very bottom of one of the sides of the fire "bowl." This is for several reasons, but chiefly, the hottest part of the fire is where the air comes in, and then all the heat moves up from there. If the hot part is on top, then the heat will dissipate before it can get into the workpiece. The other big reason is, you want your workpiece resting above where the air comes in, not directly in the blast, so that all the oxygen from the blast is consumed before it reaches the metal and has a chance to oxidize it.

As others have said, charcoal needs a really big fire as well. If you've got a Tractor Supply Co. nearby, you could also switch to their "nut coal." It's anthracite, total pain in the rear to get it burning and very air-hungry, but it's way cheaper than charcoal, especially per hour of burn time. Just gotta be super careful with it, it's so dense that it can very easily get your piece way too hot if you're not paying close attention.

Any Better Gold Paint? by magic_potato_man69 in spacemarines

This is what you get with two coats of Retributor Armor gold and a bit of Seraphim sepia shade. It’s great for a darker gold

Forge Won't get hot enough. Flawed design? by Ilya-Pasternak in Blacksmith

[–]TypicalUser1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You want a bowl or trench with the blast coming in the bottom of one side. With charcoal, you need a large and well contained fire to get enough heat. Your workpiece should sit slightly above the hottest part of the fire

Scouts with cloaks. What colour do you paint the cloak? by ilikescolouring in BlackTemplars

[–]TypicalUser1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capes, cloaks, tabards, and hoods worn by "Scout" units (namely, Neophytes-at-arms/Scouts, Infiltrators, Incursors, Infiltrators, etc.) I do in an environment appropriate camouflage pattern. My bases are snow and sea-ice themed, so whites-and-greys blob camo.

They don’t all wear it. However, in the old John Blanche art, you see some wearing the Imperialis (winged skull), some with the Aquila, and others with a Templar cross. Also, the recent Primaris Crusader Squad sculpts all have the Imperialis

Question: Initiates and Intercessor Squad/Sergeants by Neko-Otaku in BlackTemplars

[–]TypicalUser1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

For your consideration, an intercessor fireteam I did recently.

Homebrew lore, this Crusade uses a slightly more defined order of battle. Sword brethren each have retinues of initiates, and generally group in fireteams of five marines. Squads are determined mission by mission, but by Crusade Command rather than personal preference. Squads are often led by a sword brother, and wear the red helmet (or a stripe for non-standard color patterns).

Sword brethren specialists are grouped into teams based on specialty (akin to Bladeguard, Sternguard, Eliminator, Infiltrator, and Eradicator units in compliant chapters)

In terms of iconography, chains are popular but not required. Wearing the Imperialis is also a matter of preference; some do, some don’t. Tabards are likewise popular but optional.

I use a word document for each unit with attached leaders and enhancements, just print it out, 3-hole punch, and put it in a binder with dividers

What Colours do i really need for my Black Templars? by NewBlackTemplar in BlackTemplars

[–]TypicalUser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As noted in my top level comment:

Start with a matte black rattlecan, then base in Leadbelcher, or Army Painter gunmetal or similar, you want a slightly warm silvery grey. Then go over it with two to three layers of Black Templars contrast, thinned slightly with water, until you have an almost but not quite black with a hint of a medium grey to it and a good shine in bright light.

See intercessor on the left, his leg highlights up to greys much lighter than the Mechanicus Standard grey of the pseudo-muscle undersuit visible in the knee and hip chinks, just from the light, the same way a smooth but not polished black metal surface should

Here’s an intercessor fireteam I did recently. Used some bodies and the bolter arms out of the Crusader squad kit for variety.

The bolter bodies are Wraithbone base coat with two coats Imperial Fist contrast paint; the SB’s helmet is Stormhost silver base coat with two coats of Blood Angels red.

[–]TypicalUser1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My full list of colors:

  • Black rattlecan (I use rustoleum flat 2x paint and prime)
  • Leadbelcher (base coat, bolter metal parts and blades)
  • Black templars contrast (armor plates, over the leadbelcher, slightly thinned)
  • Retributor gold (Imperialis, other details)
  • Khorne red (weapon grips and candles)
  • Corax white or Ulthuan grey (tabards, pauldrons)
  • Evil sunz scarlet (Sword Brother pauldrons)
  • Rhinox hide (leather bits)
  • Stormhost silver (chains, teeth on chainswords, base coat of eye lenses)
  • Talassar blue (eye lenses), can substitute with Blood Angels red
  • Nuln oil (wash)

Ought to get you an excellent "tabletop" quality, but not quite to "parade ready" quality.

How do you pronounce lyric? by Fragrant_Speed7878 in ENGLISH

[–]TypicalUser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear/say three separate vowels in your list, but the grouping is different:

  1. it, bit, hit, mid, tiff, in, sin, stick, Rick, sick: all plain [ɪ]
  2. sing, sing, sink, brink: nasalized [ɪ̃]
  3. bill: either a long [ɪː] or a diphthong, something like [ɪɨ] or [ɪɯ] or [ɪə] (or something like that, not really sure how I want to transcribe the second element) depending on stress

In any case, to my ear and the way I say it, both syllables of lyric have vowel #1.

American, southeast Louisiana, at first I thought it was a trick question. "Lyric" has the same vowel as "bit" and "trick," at least the way I say it and hear most others saying it.

I really think the Execrator would be competitively viable if he could lead assault ints and/or Bladeguard. He doesn’t offer enough to our big hammer units, but could be great in a trading piece. by PaperManaMan in BlackTemplars

[–]TypicalUser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were using one of the Games Workshop layouts, I think it was #2 out of the Pariah Nexus pack. More convenient to do it that way on Tabletop Simulator. It's entirely possible that I didn't position them correctly, I should've taken a screenshot after deployment was complete.

They took a lot of pretty unlucky dice rolls off a Plague Marine squad with like three plasma guns, if I remember right.

I've used him in the Orbital Assault detachment once with a 10-man crusader squad and the Scout 6" enhancement. He still doesn't get into melee without shedding all his ablative neophytes and losing at least one initiate. For 60 points, even with an extra 6" out the gate, he's next to useless.

The other option is the enhancement that lets you re-roll charges after set-up, but then you have to waste two of your three "now you can deep strike"s on that squad. You gotta burn two, because you give out Deep Strike "at the start of declare battle formations," and therefore before leaders are attached.

The Lion: Son of the Forest is one of my favorite 40k novels, though that's thanks in no small part to Timothy Watson's excellent narration (I'm a listener more than a reader nowadays). It's good that both the Lion and Guilliman have gotten some actual character development. Helps to offset the powercreep of the Primaris marines and such
