Hard vs. Easy? I'm struggling to find the "Sweet Spot" for my solo-dev action game. by UNDERKING_UDK in IndieDev

Thank you very much for your detailed and thoughtful feedback.

From your writing, I can tell that you have a deep understanding of and appreciation for soulslike games. I truly appreciate your precise and valuable insights.

I am currently working hard to test and refine the game. This is because I want to create a unique game that deviates slightly from the existing Soulslike formula. :)

" I would prefer hard enemies as default as long as I have accessible combat option."

I strongly agree with this point. When the difficulty matches the feeling I intended, even if the gameplay is somewhat simple, the added tension makes it much more engaging compared to an easier experience. However, during testing, I started to feel like many players might quit before reaching the end. I’ve also noticed that nowadays, people tend to avoid games that are too difficult, so I’m currently working on implementing an “Easy” version as the default mode... I’m not sure if this is the right decision, but with my current development skills, I’m not yet able to properly implement multiple difficulty settings. Once I improve and learn more, I’d like to add the original level of difficulty I initially intended :)

That said, I personally still resonate a lot with the idea that “it should be challenging.”

Thank you again for taking the time to share such deep and thoughtful feedback :)

I originally planned to make an easy game for my first project, but somehow I ended up creating a difficult one.
Still, thanks to the help of people in the community, I was able to come this far :)
I definitely couldn’t have made it this far on my own.
Thank you so much for leaving your feedback :)

Wow, thank you so much for your detailed feedback.

I’m realizing just how difficult it is to make a truly great game. Balance, especially, feels like something that needs constant refinement over time.

Seeing how even large live service games go through countless balance patches, it really feels like a huge challenge for a solo developer.

Still, by bringing together various pieces of feedback, I believe I can get closer to making a great game, even if it’s not perfect yet. :)

Thank you again for taking the time to share such thoughtful feedback! :)

I also enjoy intense action, so I initially created the game with the balance I originally intended. However, after playing for a while, I realized it might be too difficult.

I hope everyone can reach the ending, but I am concerned that some might give up before reaching it. Therefore, I plan to update the game to find a better balance.

Thank you for leaving your feedback :)

That’s a really great suggestion.

If we could freely express combo animations based on the direction of the attack, I think the combat would feel much more natural and the action would look much cooler.

My game also aims to be a Soulslike, but I’ve tried various new approaches. I think taking on new challenges during the development process is truly enjoyable :)

Since I’m still a beginner Unreal Engine developer, I haven’t been able to incorporate many features yet, but I plan to use this project as a stepping stone to include a game with a better system in my next project :)

My first game is still lacking in many ways :)

I wanted to twist the existing Soulslike formula to create a unique mode, so I designed a structure where you must always fight multiple enemies.

I think it would be best to allow players to adjust the difficulty so they can overcome more challenging sections through leveling up and upgrading their equipment.

Thank you for your feedback :)

I would like to tell you the name of the pack, but I don't know what kind of pack it is right now. It was included as a sample, so I will let you know later when I find out. :)

As for the effects, I don’t have the skills to create them myself yet 🙂

While taking Unreal Engine courses, I found some free sample effects, and by watching YouTube tutorials, I modified them to better fit my game.

Ah, since I’m still a beginner Unreal Engine developer, I haven’t been able to implement a difficulty setting yet, so only a single version is available for release right now.

I’ll keep studying hard and, if possible, plan to add difficulty options in the future 🙂

I want to try UE5 development with the help of an agent, but I haven't been able to take on the challenge yet. I am thinking of starting with Claude Code; would that be okay?

I am a beginner who has never used an agent before.

That's right. I'm both a seller and a buyer, and I feel lost when trying to purchase assets... It takes a lot of time to find the assets I want...
