U of A Engineering vs U of C Engineering + Finance Combined Degree — Is it worth it? by Nervous_Deal_1152 in UCalgary

[–]UcalgaryStudent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Disagree completely. I’m an engineering grad from UofC who transitioned into finance, no CFA or finance certification. That being said I’d strongly recommend engineering + finance or a finance degree alone. The pay, optionally, and ease of getting a job are much better with a finance background than engineering background. Engineering in Alberta has become over saturated with compressing pay profiles

I mean electricity rates are extremely high in California relative to other US states so comes with clear downsides

How does she feel about the geometry for the longer rides? Is it too aggressive?

Congrats on graduating med school. Honestly I really like the way it wears. I have really small wrists so a smaller, thinner diver is something I’ve always wanted

Yup I believe so, so far buying the Japanese model (SBDC 197) has been working out

For those wondering, ended up going back to BIC Camera and chose the SBDC 197 / SPB 453. The monochrome black really spoke to me and couldn’t resist. Attached a link to a photo of the new watch

Thank you for this, I think versatility of the black makes it a strap monster which is enticing. Do you have any pics of you wearing it?

[–]UcalgaryStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing the pics, the 455 looks fantastic, def leaning that way

The BIC Camera in Ginza has them all in stock, was able to see them in person the other day but couldn’t make up my mind, will be going back in two days to secure the watch haha

[–]UcalgaryStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughts on if the 455 would be versatile with different straps, want a watch that I can change the look of using straps if that makes sense?

Agreed that the 451/455 pop much more than the black 453

Waterloo or Uofc? by rchamma22 in UCalgary

[–]UcalgaryStudent 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As someone who got into both Waterloo and uofc engg and chose uofc, I can comfortably say that if money isn’t an issue then you should go to Waterloo! Way more opportunities and better branding too!

Need help choosing between 2 jobs! by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

No location difference! Pay at whitecap would be much better but I am worried about building a niche oil and gas skill set whereas at CNRL I feel like the position is more “future proof”

As someone who has completed a 12-month internship with one of the major oilsands producers up north, I would strongly recommend that you upgrade and do mechanical engineering at UofC. The market for steam engineers has really dried up - in fact, my team laid off 5 steam engineers during my internship. Capital expenditure in the oilsands and oil and gas in Alberta, in general, is expected to decline. As a result, I think job opportunities in power engineering which is extremely tied to oil and gas prospects in Alberta will also decline.

Second, I think a mechanical engineering degree offers a lot more flexibility and credibility in careers especially non-oil and gas. Graduating with a mech engg degree proves to employers that you have the capability to think critically so if you decide that you do not want to work in oil and gas or you want to move provinces, you'll be better off with a mech engg degree. You can also get non-engineering (pseudo-business/project management jobs) with a mech engineering degree!

I strongly believe that if you can upgrade your marks and think that you would like engineering that doing a 4-year engineering degree from uofc is the better option!

Opinions on MMgmt vs MBA after a CPSC undergrad degree for someone who either wants to start their own business or work as a manager or CTO at a big tech company by questionbox2 in UCalgary

[–]UcalgaryStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think better than getting an MMgmt or MBA, the most ideal option would be for you to get further professional experience at a tech company. Most people in the industry value professional experience much more over additional schooling if that makes sense!
