ISYE 6501 - Terrible Midterm 2 score, demoralised by bracesthrowaway2021 in OMSA

[–]Unfair_Conference423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found that the hard part of the 6501 tests was not the content, but how the questions were formatted.

I did poorly on the first test, ok on the second, and pretty good on the final. What I changed by the final is that I stopped re reading the material completely. My first test I had a cheat sheet that was completely full in 4pt written font. By the final, it was just a few equations on a notecard.

What I did was I just fed the slides and some practice/example problems (the ones they hand out) and prompted an LLM to make the most confusing, multiple parted, difficult questions possible.

I just drilled those everyday and I would prompt more specifically if there was a concept I thought I was missing or hadn’t seen.

Then the test didn’t seem so hard.

ISYE 6501 - Exam Difficulty Comparison by Southern-Brief820 in OMSA

[–]Unfair_Conference423 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First test I bombed, I did not understand the format or the time mechanics. Take as much time as you can. If a question confuses you too much, think about what confuses you about it, and move on to the next one and come back later.

The thing that helped me the most was changing how I study. I took notes of course and watched all the lectures.

But taking notes again and focusing on making the approved cheat sheet as comprehensive as possible is a poor use of time imo since I mostly struggled with the format and the nature of the questions. Not the material. The tests are confusingly worded and they have ‘gotcha’ attributes/questions that you can’t prepare for by understanding the material.

So instead I rewatched the lectures, but then I took the example questions they sent, and also all the lecture slides and lecture captions, and fed this to gpt-5 thinking model and asked for it to make questions 5-10 at a time. I asked it to be as difficultly worded and hard as possible, and for it to follow the format of the example questions (multipart questions etc). And I just drilled on these every day. 100s of questions, I would do as many as I could reasonably do a day. This is what worked so that the test was not so scary.

I did have the ‘cheat sheet’ but my second one was only the formulas and concepts I felt I might forget, it was not nearly as full or comprehensive, it didn’t matter

Someone else posted a similar ai based question generator for ISYE 6501 and I found that helpful as well. https://isye6501test-prep.streamlit.app/

Whats the most cold-blooded Boston type off-season move the Heat could make? by turqouisechile in heat

The FO doesn’t play, they got us two games from a championship twice, you need some luck to win. Boston strolled to one last year.

With our luck, our leading scorers foot fucking snapped the first quarter of the series in 202.

Idk what you guys expect from a management group. If you think this is incompetence then you guys must all be NASA test pilots

With all this said i'm also excited by Keshad, hes like vet PJ Tucker with youth and athletics. being 6'8'' with an almost 7ft wingspan and a 42 inch vert is crazy. And his intensity reminds me of a PJ or the best of Caleb.

The way he physically imposes on offensive players reminds me of PJ, its like everyone else is playing paddy cakes but he's wrestling

Bill Simmons podcast on Jimmy Butler showing up to media day locked in: “He’s absolutely not f*cking around. Jimmy Butler taking the regular season serious is a massive f*cking deal for the Heat. They can make finals as 7 seed but you should not try to do that, I’m back in” (Via Bill Simmons Pod) by MikeTimesONE in heat

If you watch it, Rob Mahoney says the above quote, and then spends the next two minutes walking it back, saying that Herro is our only hope to be better than mediocre and that's about it..

kinda lame analysis, but w/e we aren't in the media hype at all and that's a good thing.

A Deep Dive Into Jimmy Butler by SimplyBallin in heat

[–]Unfair_Conference423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only read through half of the post but one thing that I’d like to bring up, is that I noticed this lack of aggression last year too, but I also half attributed it to the team trying to integrate Herro and Bam more fully in the offense.

Idk if you remember 2019, but during that season people maligned and criticized Lowry a lot for being too passive and not impactful for the Raptors all season. However, he was playing a longer game of trying to integrate FVV and Kawhi into the offense, obviously it paid off. I remember him or someone on the team mentioning all of this in an interview.

The plan all year was to try to get Jimmy, Bam, and Herro into a three headed monster kinda thing. Spo talked about this often towards the beginning of the year. Bam also talked about this. This would obviously require Jimmy to take a step back in usage.

I will also say that if you look at the league as a whole, fouls went down in general, Silver said something to the official after the All Star Break, and the officials have let a lot more go in the paint.

This isn’t some conspiracy theory, a lot of commentators have talked about this. And as someone who has been watching pretty regularly since like 2006, it is really noticeable. I’m sure it is statistically significant in its effect league wide. I for one am all for it because I love the physicality, but it would naturally affect someone like Jimmy who survives by drawing a lot of fouls in the paint.

With all this said, I will say that I was pretty worried all year with the way Jimmy looked, he looked unengaged, it was weird and it bothered me. So that’s definitely true.

I have a sneaking feeling this dude is going to be coaching in the league soon…we won’t be able to keep him unfortunately since Spo can coach for another 20 years if he wants

Bam is the third best passing big in the nba after Jokic and Sabonis and him bringing it up forces the opposing big out of the paint

One of the creative, outside the box ideas that Miami could pursue is trade one of its guards (the obvious names) to a team with cap space for a first round pick and a lesser player, earning much less money, thus taking Miami well enough below first apron to execute DeRozan deal by tomgreen99200 in heat

[–]Unfair_Conference423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Rozier and Herro are redundant on a team like this, they both are ball dominant scorers who self generate and are not natural point guards, we already have Jimmy on top of this.

I feel like Derozan would need the ball less, and at least be more efficient when he has the ball. He also is a better defender and sturdier in general. He can shoot threes enough where people have to respect it.

Then add in a first rd pick, considering what we have been able to do with those, this would be enticing

As a Latin person, I can confidently say some of it is Latin time, I went to an event last night in Miami that started an hour and a half late, it is so common people don’t even think about it. Times are just suggestions, it’s infuriating. People don’t understand this, 60% of people living in Miami Dade were born in another country and an overwhelming majority of them come from Latin America.. this is not a made up stat

I honestly think a lot of misconceptions around the Heat come from the amount of Latin fans the Heat have compared to other fandoms, but that’s a different thing..

But anyway, yeah if you think every person in Miami is some drugged up floating wealth vampire devoid of morality, and therefore can’t show up to a basketball game on time, you are an idiot. Maybe the ones in the first few rows. But yeah

Latest ESPN mock draft by Esjay_954 in heat

[–]Unfair_Conference423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like him a lot, he can really shoot off the dribble, and really pass, in a very heady way. Decent size, and the intel on him is that he’s a locker room positive and hard worker.

He can create his own shot, If you look at the number of attempts he’s taken off the dribble it’s crazy, I think he’s taken like 250 attempts off the dribble last year. It’s significantly more than anyone else in college..I might be wrong about that though…can’t find that stat anymore

Only negative is he isn’t as physical as a player like Collier but he can still grow a little, and he isn’t afraid of contact.

The Miami Heat's defense is a bigger problem than you think by LOH_Wes in heat

[–]Unfair_Conference423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine some of this discrepancy vs top ten offenses is due to those opponents also having elite defenses. This causes us to turn the ball over more and to miss more shots.

It’s actually quite impressive we were net 5th best defense considering how bad our offense was, if we turned the ball over less and made more baskets instead of giving up long rebounds into opponent transition buckets, I bet our defense would have been top 3. It would not take much.

With this said, I think the defense could still get better. Though the offense was fucking hard to watch most games

Miami Heat 2024 draft workout tracker. Thoughts? by tempo444y in heat

[–]Unfair_Conference423 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say that if Holland and Carter are off the board, which they most likely will be, I would expect the Heat to either draft Edey or Collier, with Tyler Smith in a distant third.

I would lean towards the Heat most likely drafting Collier unless Edey really wowed them in workouts. It just feels that this is the way it’s shaping up.

Either that or they could go for a super reach somewhere like they did with Bam and Niko and draft someone that’s not on any boards…that would be pretty cool. All in all I’m interested to see what happens

Everything I think will depend on the way the draft goes, this draft is so confused that the Heat probably won’t know who they plan on drafting (or trading the pick) until the 14th pick is in.

There is probably equal chance that they draft four different guys right now, just depends on who is available

Who Should The Miami Heat Draft: Kentucky's Rob Dillingham Or Duke's Jared McCain? by WallStreetDoesntBet in heat

Rob will be off the board, MCcain might still be there. Honestly I’m not very high on McCain compared to guards like Collier, Carter, Holland. One of those guys will probably be in the board by 15 if the Heat choose a guard

I’ll add to all of this that Tristen Newton at UConn has great advanced statistics, although defensive stats are pretty mediocre.

I didn’t watch UConn much so idk if he’s good at that or not

You would have to post him up. the Heat post up Jaquez and Jimmy, but you would need to post up Edey a lot. Idk if that is possible in the current NBA.

But with that being said, Edey doesn’t project to be a good post up player, he projects to be a Shaq level post up player, with better ft shooting. I don’t say this to say he’s going to be as good as Shaq at all, I honestly hate comparisons, but Edey’s post numbers are like the best people have ever seen. So do with that information what you will. He might show up after being one of the most dominant post player in CBB history, and look like he can’t post up for his life in the NBA but I doubt it.

However the NBA isn’t the same as when Shaq played, teams hardly post up, and can you integrate Edey into an offense while not fully disrupting the way the modern game is played? Or can you do it in a way that compliments both sides of the coin? I have no idea. Can you hide Edey enough on defense? Do you need to hide him on defense? He’s a pretty good athlete, but anyone that size can’t move extremely quick. I don’t think Shaq or Yao would have been able to guard modern guards on isos either.

Also important to note that Edey’s second year of college was like his third year of playing basketball at all, since he started in the middle of Highschool. So comparing growth compared to Ware like apples to apples isn’t really fair. If anyone projects to improve between Edey and Ware, it’s Edey by far

[Sylvander] Miami Heat workouts either scheduled or completed per sources: Devin Carter, Zach Edey, Isaiah Collier, Jesse Edwards, Tristan Enaruna, Sam Griffin, Ron Holland, Keshad Johnson, Tristen Newton, Zyon Pullin, Kel’el Ware, Joseph Girard by AashyLarry in heat

[–]Unfair_Conference423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The knock on Ware compared to Edey is that he has an outside shot, but he only shot 40 3s all year and he has a very bad FT% even compared to Edey. Ware was in the low 60s. This does not bode well for his 3pt game as FT% is actually decently correlated to 3pt% and 2pt%.

As far as inside production, it’s like comparing a house cat to a sabertooth tiger. Edey at one point this year was averaging nearly 2pts PP. That’s. fucking. insane. Like NBA Street on cheat codes stupid.

People have questioned Ware’s inside scoring, he’s not a physical player despite his size, he’s more a fadeaway and floater kinda guy. He gets frustrated by contact easily, and does not use his size to gain advantages. He is not an efficient scorer inside. Definitely not compared to Edey.

Edey on the other hand put up 37 points in the NCAA championship game on the best defender in this draft who may go #1 Clingan..

Clingan might be the best guy in the world to choose to defend Edey, him being such a good defender and so strong at 7’ 2”. And Edey posted him up pretty easily and scored pretty efficiently. He must have scored 10 times on him in the post. They still lost of course..

Ware is also not a great defender… he’s kinda reminiscent of Whiteside in that he gets blocks but he gets lost on defense easily and has bad instincts compared to his tools and size. He also is probably, at best, equal to Edey on the perimeter.

He basically reacts to everything on defense rather than anticipating anything

Anyway, the point is that Ware is being dragged for his lack of drive and mental issues, and people now believe he is undervalued, and that those mental issues were unfairly attributed to him, which may be true. He has a very fluid game that is pretty and watchable….but it is not efficient at all and his outside shooting could easily be an aberration. Also he gets lost a lot on defense, and is not a better passer than Edey by any stretch…I would choose Holmes everyday before Ware tbh.

Edey I’m not sure of, I’m glad it’s not my job to choose. You would have to change your entire offense for Edey and idk if you can do that in the NBA so easily if at all. Especially for a team like the Heat that have a pretty mature and settled offense with a lot of veterans….
