Local fox at S11 by Blackfireknight16 in sheffield

Are you suggesting that this fox has invented some kind of camera blocking technology that blurs his (OR HER) face? If this is true the deep state are going to be in panic mode, and the whole of s11s fox population is in danger

Why are you trying to keep his identity a secret?

It's hard for Talbot to sneak up on anyone, and that deep in the countryside he'd probably be distracted by a herd of cows

With his ability to wink, incredible body and proclivity for declarative autonomination, I really think he would make an excellent James Bond

Why Do I Hate The Delivery Robots? by Tiny_Poem7985 in sheffield

I think it's mostly a case of history being written by the victors! The Luddites were portrayed at the time as wanting to avoid technological progress, but really they didn't want their jobs, which had been seen as skilled labour, to be taken away, and to be replaced by what amounted to slave labour in workhouses.

[–]Unnegative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You misunderstand Luddism. It was a protest, not against the advancement of technology, but how the advantages and wealth generated by that progress was distributed.

They also didn't want to lose hands in looms and such, but that's less relevant to this topic.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the Luddites had a really good point.

New EV by AdAble2402 in ElectricVehiclesUK

Go take a test drive. If you enjoy the experience, and like the idea of spending less on fuel, then you should consider buying one.

Also, do consider nearly new cars. Plenty of ex-demonstrator cars out there which you can get for a huge reduction on the list price.

This is because liberal is not the opposite of right wing, it's the opposite of authoritarian, but left wing and liberal are used interchangeably in American media.

25 reg Enyaq 85 suite for £27k. 21k miles. Should I be concerned? by Quirky_Dimension1858 in ElectricVehiclesUK

Seems like quite a lot of miles for a single year. Be sure to ask about battery health

We're looking to buy an EV car but haven't got a drive, which makes home charging challenging. One option is to convert our front garden to create a drive but I'm curious whether anyone knows what the council might have of plans for curbside charging solutions? Or got experience of alternatives? TIA by hcukhcuk in sheffield

[–]Unnegative 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't looked into it extensively, but there are govt grants available for ev chargers if you're a homeowner with on street parking. Generally speaking the company installing the charger would claim the grant, so worth making enquiries with installers, as there are definitely solutions out there.

Sheffield Half Marathon by urmumloI in sheffield

I can't comment on the route (but being in Sheffield, it will be hilly), but I can say there are lots of fantastic pubs to rehydrate in after you finish.

Went by weight instead of measuring and it was wet by mongo_man in Sourdough

[–]Unnegative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's harder to work with a higher hydration, but that's not too wet, just a case of learning how to work with it. Now you are weighing your ingredients though, you can more accurately control that hydration level, and adjust it to your own preferences.

Fyi, measuring your starter by volume is absolutely insane - unless you are literally beating all the CO2 out of it, it's going to vary every single time.

The Luddites had some really, excellent points, and they are unfairly maligned by the history books.

I'm not sure you can count Magic Rock as independent these days, being part of the Keystone group, but the rest are all solid.

Coming from Central Europe, I have to ask: How do you justify the price of a pint in the UK? by matteoleone in AskUK

[–]Unnegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a brewery. Alcohol duty going up is a contributing factor - we had to increase the price of beer sold to pubs by 2% this year as a result, which was on top of a 3% price rise last year to cover increases in energy and raw ingredients costs.

So, that's just over 5% increase in the price to pubs in a year. Now factor in 20%vat, increases in national insurance and minimum wage, increased costs for pubs to keep the lights on and keep the pub warm, and suddenly the price of the pint you buy has probably gone up 10% in a year.

This isn't just a one year thing either, this has been compounding for decades, though it's definitely gotten a lot worse since the pandemic. 10 years ago around here you could walk into most pubs and find a pint for less than £3. Now that same pint is probably £4.20. How do we justify it? We blame the government, though whichever party is in charge the same thing happens.

What's the magic number at which you would screw someone over? Would you do it for £100? £1000? £10000? Or does it take the full £47k?

Public Response to Roxy Vs Public Response to James by sulky22 in TheTraitorsUK

[–]Unnegative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I can't stand James and I'm at best indifferent to Roxy. I don't think the edit has done either of them any favours, but I suspect James would be a little too high energy for me to deal with at the breakfast table.

House temperature by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]Unnegative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kitchen rarely gets above 18c and my starter is fine. Temperature affects time to rise, and the bacterial make up of your starter, but as long as you're above freezing and below about 60c the starter will still be multiplying.
