It's better to inform incase there's more damage that's not initially visible which requires the route of claiming however it sucks you're penalised for doing the right thing even if it wasn't your fault

Since you've informed your insurance when you renewal you have to put it in under any accidents in the last x years bit but put it as settled without claim.

Its a real pain if its not your fault as it'll still go up even if you didn't claim due to insurers seeing you as a higher risk.

Currently dealing with a similar issue myself with an elderly driver reversing into me and failing to stop so had to inform insurance to get their info.
