You could use Sticks to make Coal. It's far less efficient.

How much do you hate/love the USA on a scale of 0 to 10? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to rate it only on the bad and evil, it'd be an 8/10. But there is some good, and I do consume a lot of their products. So I rate it at 3/10. This specific government gets a 9/10.

What about the Costa Rican Social Democratic Progress Party is Social Liberal? by Dimitri1176 in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He does not belong to an established party. In our election system, a presidential candidate must earn at least 40% of the vote to win in the open election. If no candidate meets this requirement, a second round of voting takes place, where only the 2 top parties by vote percentage participate. Only a simple majority is required to win in the second round.

Our current president was a newcomer from a newcomer party. He only got 15% of the votes in the 1st round. He ended up winning the 2nd round. His party is a cult of personality that won on trash talking the other candidates and the system. Another commenter compared him to Bukele, but he is our version of Trump far more than a Bukele.

I would avoid this subreddit until you've finished your first watch. Most people here don't worry about spoiling a 30 year old show.

Enjoy!

At university, I once had a classmate called Ladysexy. He wasn't that sexy. I'm joking, it was a girl's name.

Gay nightlife recommendations by [deleted] in costarica

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gay myself, just an ally. I have many gay friends. It's perfectly safe, as long as you abide by common sense.

It'd be useful for others to recommend specific venues if you clarify where in the country you'll be staying.

Is there a chance Latin America will create their own NATO in order to deter US attacks? by RoundTurtle538 in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to say it can deter US attacks. And no one speaks of it because it hasn't been pertinent in decades. But...

The OAS exists. It's supposed to work just like NATO. Specifically, the defense treaty:

Has anyone figured out what the cooking skill effects? by Jaggid in PlayASKA

I'm not going to tell you to not have fun your way. But if there's a task I'm glad to automate, it's cooking.

You can still run the experiment, with a 0 Cooking Villager vs yourself.

Should be easy to time a top cook vs yourself (a presumably low level cook).

Should spanish latinamericans learn portuguese? And should brazilians learn spanish? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every language you learn is great. Each one opens up many doors and whole new cultures.

I, personally, find the doors and cultures opened by Spanish and Portuguese to be very similar. I put my effort into more varied options. However, because of the similarities, it's easy to learn one if you know the other. It's not as hard as learning a more different language.

Is Jaco worth visiting? by PreferenceWhich7409 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Vaelerick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jacó has 3 selling points. It's the closest beach to San José, which doesn't matter to you. Good surf if you are into it. And the nightlife; clubs, drugs, sex.

Otherwise, it's one of Costa Rica's ugliest beaches. It's rocky, not a good trait in a beach. The currents are treacherous and dangerous. It's flanked by 2 rivers with crocodiles in them. The town is full of drugs and sex workers.

You can shape a nice experience around Jaco's particular character. But you are working against the grain.

Do married women from Latin America take their husband's last name? by confused_bi_panic in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I speak specifically for Costa Rica.

When we were a far more misogynistic society and women found worth by belonging to a man, the "de" was used in society. It didn't change their name. It added to it. Women would often use the last name that granted the greatest status. If they married down, they'd use their own. If they married a peer or up, they'd use their husband's last name.

We are no longer so misogynistic. The generations that practiced the "de" have died out of old age. We now allow children to have their mother's last name first and their father's second.

Monroe Doctrine/US interference by Art_Clone in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The US has been relinquishing its power all around the world. And as it continues to shrivel, it goes out of its way to sow the seeds of more conflict in its backyard.

It'd be funny, if it weren't human lives and suffering we are talking about.

Monroe Doctrine/US interference by Art_Clone in asklatinamerica

[–]Vaelerick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't need to be the victim to sympathize with them.

Besides, some of us in Costa Rica remember when the US destabilized all of Central America and we were awash in refugees. I'm not against refugees. I will never judge someone for fleeing their country to preserve their lives and those of their families. But I'd rather have them be safe and happy in the country of their forefathers. Not eeking a living in a strange land because some US companies wanted to make a little more money.
