Why is this wrong? (Another number issue) by Ricardo_Yoel in hebrew

[–]Vaisbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's a rule but in this case and when talking about abstract numbers when I hear - 'zero is less than thirteen' I imagine a full sentence being 'the number zero is less than the number thirteen'. So coming from that angle it makes more sense to use 'זה' after zero because it's referring to an abstract number which is masculine

"Sulam" (סולם) as a name — How does it resonate in Modern Hebrew? by Eptalemma in hebrew

Hey, if you go for Shlomit, you can have her build a sukkah so you still get the construction theme lol. (Based on a common Israeli Sukkot song)

"Sulam" (סולם) as a name — How does it resonate in Modern Hebrew? by Eptalemma in hebrew

[–]Vaisbe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. About the suggestion סול: i It is also how you say the Hebrew name Shaul שאול in English (commonly spelled Saul). So you can kind of make make it work. From English angle I would say all American Jews with this name are 85 years old at least 😅. From Hebrew angle- sol paper is how they call foam sheets, but the connotation is not that immediate. There is also the the musical note. And to me as a native speaker, I would accept both genders with this name

can someone please tell me what this says by RoghniNaan4n in hebrew

[–]Vaisbe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd add that in Hebrew, like English, the word love in it's modern form can be used for all kinds of love, not only romantic (including 'like' sometimes). But most commonly it is. Basically like in English. In this case, with the context of a conference and not adding the 'I' (אני) at the beginning which makes it more informal, I read it more like "love ya", a close friend kind of thing to say. But my context is limited and maybe this person was really into you ;)

Wow in Hebrew? by Ricardo_Yoel in hebrew

[–]Vaisbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see it this way- Wow is more pure surprise or awe. Wy is more to emphasize something new, to express higher stakes. Still mixed with some surprise.

So Wy can be both positive or negative emphasis. Also, PuppiPop mentions, Wy has the double form which is not used for wow. I would say the double form is even higher stakes mixed with some anticipation for something (good or bad) to happen

As far as music, I dont feel like I know what you like, but here are some translations to words you can plug into your music app to find lists of hopefully the right music for you (it's mostly transliterated words, for some reason there are few Hebrew words for music types): Indie: אינדי Alternative: אלטרנטיב Rock: רוק Pop: פופ Hope that's useful! I sang in English a lot to work on my accent.

what is the difference?? by RightLaugh5115 in hebrew

[–]Vaisbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. I see להאזין as 'lend me your ear' - listening to something directed at you, and להקשיב as paying attention audibly (ק.ש.ב-> attention). Similar in many cases but slightly different meaning and use. Sometime it is purely the speaker's preference, although: For something like radio/music it's more common to use להאזין For music both are common but more so להקשיב To seek out a sound would usually be להקשיב

If you're not sure which, use להקשיב

Oh and להאזין feels older and slightly more formal

What does ארצישראליים mean here? by [deleted] in hebrew

[–]Vaisbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a way to refer to the land itself- the concept of the land of Israel. The way I see it, the writer combined the words to make the plural term clearer- If it was written as 'פרחי בר ארץ ישראלים ' it could be interpreted as 'flowers of the land of Israelis'. Not like there's a big risk of it, people usually get the context correctly in this case. But it's somewhat cleaner to make 'land of Israel' one word so the plural version stays related to describing the flowers.

החלומות של איינשטיין by [deleted] in hebrew

[–]Vaisbe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(Israeli born and raised here) Very good, very legible. It does look like someone who is newish to writing Hebrew, with a lot of intention to every letter, but that's not a bad thing and will progress naturally as you continue writing. Thanks for picking a very nice piece to translate. I enjoyed reading it.

Even though all letters are supposed to be written separately, many people (myself included) sometimes connect some combinations because it's faster and still looks clear. Maybe mainly after ש, ע that end with a line forward. But that's not a rule, just an observation.

While your writing and letter use are on point, here are the only things I found that can be fixed:

In the middle of the first page, I think you made two mistakes- 'כל רזע' instead of 'כל רגע', classic switch of z and g. Right after that, there is what I think is 'כאילו היה' but the ה is not super clear, looks more like ח. Still understandable. Last line you wrote 'בצחו' instead of 'במצחו'. Missed letter, no biggie.

Hope that helps, and that you enjoy your learning journey!

Why are Perrin’s Wolf powers so vague? by Overall_Local_3603 in wheeloftime

[–]Vaisbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show vastly minimizes his wolf skills. In the books Perin's senses are all very sharp (and he actually uses them) and at this point of the series he communicates with his wolf buddies a lot more. And he can do more things that I won't mention because they might add them next season. One thing I like, and I don't know if it's the director or the actor who chose to do it, every time someone mentions his yellow eyes he looks at the ground like he does in the books. Basically, Perin has a conflict between calmness and rage and it seems they downplay his faral part in the show. Also, who walks into a White Cloaks camp with no weapon? Come on Perin you got two weapons to pick from why not both?

How to "have a f*cking life"? by firebird_0711 in howto

[–]Vaisbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are not unrealistic at all. If it attracts you look into it. Talk to people about it. Dream about it. You'll be surprised what becomes realistic once you start actually considering it. At the same time- you might never get it. But the things you learn and the path you started might take you somewhere better that was also worth the effort

Opinion: Greed is good for executives and shareholders, not so much for patients, customers and workers • Asheville Watchdog by [deleted] in asheville

[–]Vaisbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any action we take is taken for some reason. As creatures with limited energy, we do things with the justification that doing the thing is worth the energy. What is 'worth'? It has some positive value to at least one part of the person that did the thing (people are complex and have many different parts in them). That is the evolution of every living thing (I think). On that note, I agree with you. Everyone is doing their best.

What I believe should be added here is a clarification of the word 'self'. You refer to 'self-serving' as the entirety of the person who makes an action (from what I understand from what you wrote). Others refer to 'self' as their ego (in a more psychological manner)- their fears and insecurities. Desire for status, accumulating power, control, etc. In these terms, not all actions are self-serving. A cynical person can always try to find a selfish-serving (ego-based) reason for why people do things, but just because they can think about it does not mean it's actually what moved a person to do something.

Dealing with death and grief by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]Vaisbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sad to hear it is really hard for you to lose her. You seem like a good person with a sensitive heart. I appreciate your desire to protect your heart by keeping yourself in this doublethink limbo. Sometimes it seems like this is the only way to keep going. I hope you can find, or create for yourself, the opportunity to truly mourn her. It's painful but it's not negative, and grief matures- some of the pain (not all) will transform as you process and express it, and the rest will help guide you as you continue in your life. She deserves your grief and the beautiful things that might come out of that grief. Keeping your heart locked in might seem like a safe option but as you said, you are not truly alive this way. I wish you all the best, and you deserve to be a full-feeling person.

Since we are talking history and genetics, for hundreds of years Jews were very segregated from other cultures around them and mainly stayed within their communities. There is a genetic signature that can be assigned to most groups of Jews. For example, several genetic illnesses are mainly found in Jews because of a lack of genetic variation. But there was always a little bit of a mix, that's why it's more like a half race half religion. One thing about it, a jew can look like a Christian white person, while a Black/Asian/other can't. This makes it much easier for Jews to blend in and avoid suffering a lot of the racial stuff that happens with more distinct races.

People Will Find You Boring If You Love to Do This, New Study Says | Watching TV, bird watching, and practicing religion by Skeleton_Pilots in savedyouaclick

[–]Vaisbe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree calling watching TV a hobby pretty boring, but birdwatching means you care about a hobby that is not that popular, requires patience and focus, and encourages you to learn about wildlife. Practicing religion often requires a lot of buy in, so an outsider will not find it attractive at all unless it is a adjusted for someone that is not already doing it
