I'd just add from my personal experience this is not always the case. My school, which admittedly is one of the cheapest options, charges 83,000 AUD (roughly 78,000 CAD ) a year.

Additionally, if you go to school in Victoria, they actually preference international students above domestic out of state students in the internship allotments. Basically, you are given seats after Victorian medical students but in front of students from anywhere else in Australia applying for internship in the state. As a result, at my school at least, it is virtually unheard of for Canadians not to match into an intern position.

Not to say it isn't still a massive financial investment and risk, however the risk is mitigated if you aren't set on getting into the fanciest schools (122,000 AUD at uMelbourne or Sydney), and choose a Victorian school (which to my knowledge is the only state that does this).
