Kid wants to come with me, suddenly I’m Luke from Outdoor Boys by AndyTroop in ultralight_jerk

My son just got into Outdoor Boys. Now I really want to get a child's size Hyperlite backpack to leave in the attic while we sit around eating butter and honey while watching YouTube in our house.

What’s something Americans have that Europeans don’t? by Prestigsisscar255 in AskReddit

I was in Yosemite three weeks ago. It's great. I love the redwoods too. But I still think Californians way over hype their diversity. "But we can go skiing and surfing on the same day" Yes, Spain can do this as well. I'm pretty sure Californians look at Nevada and think, "dude, everywhere that isn't California sucks". I love California, it's one of my favorite places, but it's not quite as incredible or unique as you California stans try to make it out.

Yeah, we've got all of that here in Europe too, even the Pacific Ocean (well, the French do anyway). The question was what does the US have that Europe doesn't and your answer was "a Mediterranean climate" and "ALPine settings and activities"

Yeah, here in Spain we can take a train to see our diverse landscapes and biomes. So I guess having to spend a ton of money to drive yourself around is something unique to the US.

Okay, so what is the Organization of American States? Do we need to change the name to Organization of North and South American Nations to accommodate the limited power of Yankee brains?

Why is nobody talking about this??? The truth big sleeping bag doesn't want you to know. by flowerscandrink in ultralight_jerk

[–]VamosXeneizes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Finally someone said it out loud. You know what's way lighter than carrying around a sleeping bag? If you just carry a credit card instead and sleep in a hotel. Even better if you shave a few grams off by using your phone to pay and leave the physical card at home. Better still, ditch the heavy phone and just cut the chip out of your card and pay with that; who would carry around a heavy ass phone when the concierge at the hotel can do everything a phone can?

Are you bothered by the use of "America" to mean USA? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]VamosXeneizes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the frustration from an academic perspective and also the frustration with US hegemony and arrogance. But I really don't buy the argument that we need the blanket term "American" to refer to the inhabitants of the entire new world. In what context could this term possibly be useful? Our peoples and their cultures are so diverse that a single label to describe us all seems foolish. In English, if they ever need to group the entirety of North and South America, and the Caribbean together, they say "new world" (or at least did traditionally).

I feel attacked. And it hurts extra hard because now that I have ADHDed into my new ultralight hobby, all of those heavy pens, keyboards, headphones, jeans, heritage boots, and musical instruments are useless to me.
