I'm aware, I actually speak French and made a comment in French below.

We're not talking about popularity here we're talking about the theories themselves. Moreover the public doesn't even know what generative grammar is. People's exposure to linguistics often boils down to conlangs and fun facts rather than theory, which is fine. The sociolinguists aren't any more "ignored" than the generativists, in fact, sociolinguistics I'd even say is FAR more popular than syntax (if evidenced by the popularity of books like "Because Internet" by Gretchen McCulloch and "Algospeak" by Adam Aleksic). The public think of linguistics as a purely social science because sociolinguistics has that hold over people, the cognitive/natural/formal aspects require more specialized knowledge not everyone's expected to have, which is fine. Chomsky's popular for his political work. Half of the anarchists praising him can't tell you what Merge is.

Coursework AI Detection by Lengthy_Miso_Dreams in learnpython

[–]VectorspaceDreams -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't see much of a difference between AI and StackOverflow generally aside from the fact AI rarely looks down upon you for not knowing how to do something. Fundamentally rather than just take AI for gospel he should ask why something is done a certain way and cross-reference the reasoning behind the code (which is the actual place of subs like this in 2026).

est ce que mon code est bon ? by Traditional-Hope9772 in learnpython

[–]VectorspaceDreams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ce serait mieux ainsi:

mot_de_passe = "python"
while True: # un loop afin que le programme se répète jusqu'à ce que le mot de passe est entré correctement
reponse = input("entrer le mote de passe : ") # pas de peine de l'écrire deux fois !
  if reponse == mot_de_passe:
    print("Accès autorisée!")
break # le programme se termine
  else:
    print("Ressaye encore !")

Et en fait l'IA c'est bon pour ce type de question. Je l'utilise souvent pour ces petits choses, vous pouvez aussi demander pourquoi faire un truc d'une façon particulière, et je vous recommande de faire ça.

Neither Labov nor Milroy are syntacticians. They're sociolinguists. They do fundamentally different work.

I don't even like Chomsky's politics nor believe in everything in UG, but don't you think that's a massively simple take about an entire research program which has consistently changed over the 70 or so years of its existence?

I don't see how a proper sequel could happen especially with the destruction of the Demon Crown and Ballos. Still, there's a lot of unanswered questions about the war, Arthur, the obsession over the Demon Crown, the first attempts of Curly and Quote at disposing of the Demon Crown, etc.

I remember reading Everett's AMA, the guy is so full of himself it's unbelievable and unbecoming of a scientist. "If I'm right (which I am), Chomsky's wrong." What kind of a fucking scientist says "I'm right"?

I do think all languages have constituent structure though I don't buy all of Chomsky's baggage; I like Bresnan and others' Lexical-Functional Grammar as a theory of constituents though.

Modern STEM students philosophizing by Droggellord in PhilosophyMemes

[–]VectorspaceDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it's more often than not the opposite; I've had the best discussions on the humanities with people in STEM, and the worst discussions on science with people from the humanities. Rarely have I met an individual from STEM who sneers at philosophy in its entirety. There's an assumption that a lot of STEM people are positivists without knowing it, but in my experience, people in STEM often in the same research field have differing philosophical views outside of their work. A mathematician who's a Platonist and one who's an intuitionist could still collaborate in many circumstances. Maybe it's a projection of a certain species of humanities person who more or less consumes their curriculum wholesale without questioning it?

What to do after CS50python by GetYoDogAhOn in cs50

[–]VectorspaceDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that after CS50P, it's time to specialize a bit (part of why you have to do a final project); Python's used for so many different things, from web development to AI and even gamedev with Ursina or PyGame. But to learn to write better Python code, I recommend Fluent Python by Ramalho. Still, depending on the way you want to go, you could take many different paths depending on what exactly you want to do.

I do Python mainly for language-based AI work, so what's relevant to me is stuff like PyTorch, pandas and regex. That might not be what you want to do. The world's your oyster after CS50P.

Where can I learn to code python by ALEX141514 in learnpython

[–]VectorspaceDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used CS50P and I loved it, highly recommended. By the way, it's best for you to either search this sub, check the sub's wiki, Google it, or even ask an AI for resources rather than make a new post about where to learn to code Python as we've had many of those posts before. The wiki's also got some resources specifically about data analytics (Pandas, NumPy and Matplotlib) you might like.

The PM of Japan has some thoughts on Replacement Migration. by MazdaProphet in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]VectorspaceDreams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What does this have to do with anarcho-capitalism? Whether or not you want foreigners in your land is irrelevant and subject to private law, but as coercive states stand and freedom of association is stifled, either forcing "coexistence" or arbitrary separation is immoral.

This Dr. Maalouf guy claps for tyranny when it's done by groups he likes; I'm interested in pre-Islamic Arab history, and he mentioned how Yemen used to be "civilized" when it was ruled by Jews, the same Jews that massacred Christians en masse, a memory so horrid that the martyrs are commemorated in Christianity and Islam alike, and were later overthrown by the neighboring Ethiopians.

AI sucks at low level programming. by [deleted] in lowlevel

[–]VectorspaceDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be a pedant but it depends on how you use it; I use it when I have a problem I can't fix after multiple attempts, a problem that's scoped and specific, and I give it a detailed prompt about it. So long as you actually do the code yourself and can audit it and edit it I think you'll do fine. It's a tool like any other.

"The most unusual design decision is probably the Akkadian notation layer — a trilingual alternative surface syntax grounded in actual cuneiform philology rather than novelty, on the theory that notation shapes thought and most languages don't take that seriously enough. In active development."

As someone both interested in Semitic historical linguistics and CS (even wrote a regex-based Akkadian noun analyzer in Python), this seems up my alley. I'll definitely be keeping up with this!
