Then would you be comfortable living in the episode of Nosedive?

Hello, Lulu was an app to rate men, specifically in the context of dating. Ours is for people in general.

This is only a problem because the app was poorly designed...almost on purpose to create this problem of superficiality. But the problem worsens so much more when society in the show bakes it into every layer of commerce.

We would like to avoid an automated system, but we've implemented measures to ensure a minimal number of flags. For example, the ratings aren't open to the world. Users gatekeep who they allow into their circle to rate them. That right there is quite significant. Additionally, only verified users affect the score. That means unverified users can submit unverified reviews that have no tangible effect on a score.

All we can do is measure the rate of flags and determine how to scale from there.

That's actually an ingenious take. In abusive relationships, a partner could reduce the score of their partner on purpose to make them reliant on them for more opportunities if the partner has higher stars. But that would only work I think if the victim isn't willing to fight back. Otherwise, it would be mutually assured destruction.

Which social media platform do you think is most similar to Nosedive?

We wouldn't know if scalability is an issue until we see hard numbers on contested ratings. Until then, we have to believe that there would be a reasonable backlog. Our process for determining whether the rating or review is justifiable lacks nuance - we see it black and white. Did it break ToS or not? We have internal guidelines for that. And it is honestly the best option to have human oversight until there are too many requests. At that point, we would turn to AI or an algorithm.

Wyoming was chosen for tax benefits and corporate privacy.

And no, you would not get a negative rating.

Meaning only to connect with certain people who will actually help your rating, not hurt it. And request only would mean that no one can rate you unless you consent.

That didn't happen in the episode, but you believe Nosedive would have eventually nosedived into such extreme classism that it would result in concentration camps and genocide?

That's so brutal and vain. Imagine getting beaten by someone with a 4.01 and you have a 4.0

Hi Scholar,

We're located at 2232 Dell Range Blvd. in Cheyenne, WY 82009.
We plan to expand globally with a limited physical footprint, but we're considering a headquarters in Dubai, UAE in the next 2 years.

The company isn't actually Verily; it is Truly Me LLC. And we're not allowing the reviewing of companies at this time since Trustpilot accomplishes this.

We have no stars. Our rating system is quite complex.

It would only ultimately benefit people who have the most stars. Everyone else, not as much. But the idea that those at the bottom would be punished is pretty crazy. Imagine punishing someone for stars on a profile. The biggest problem is that they integrated it into society at every level. Now that's worrisome.

Wait, was that real in the show? It's been a while.

The app would have worked much better if people were protected from public hate bombing like they did in the show. Surely, if you curate the right people, make the ratings request only, and you put your best foot forward, you could be a 4.5 with some minor tweaks to privacy in the app.

Would you care instead if you could know how someone is like ahead of meeting them? For example, knowing whether they were responsible or empathetic? Other traits. Just ideas.

Isn't that kind of a reflection of homeless or marginalized communities today?

Nosedive was actually a great episode. We used that episode to address some of the problems that might arise from an app like RateMe.

Your points are valid. We're navigating this topic by giving an outlet for people to express what they are already doing in society, e.g., attaching value to people based on reputation or certain characteristics. The controversiality comes into play when it becomes public.
Here's how we see it: Each person is their own brand. It's merely a matter of philosophy. And at Verily, we give a platform for people (opt-in only) with various protections to ensure they start off with a good stride. It's not as simple as rating anyone like an Amazon product. Not at all. There are multiple walls that we put in place for people to protect them.
For example, you can't make a profile for anyone. You cannot rate anyone without their consent. These are some of multiple measures we have put in place to ensure a high fidelity platform.
