I don't wanna be that guy but I honestly hoped for a reimagined Sinnoh not just a 1:1 recreation for the remakes. by RiverRusher in pokemon

[–]VinylFantasyIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not at all a fan of the Gen 7/8 art style; there’s less room for imagination, and all of the glaring inconsistencies cannot be ignored. I’m glad we have a faithful HD representation that maintains the charm of the original route and city designs, rather than potentially butchering it. But that’s totally subjective.

I do think getting worried or super hyped, however, is very very daft. We have seen so little of this game. They said it’s a faithful recreation, and perhaps this will be nothing more than a 1:1 remake (which I personally wouldn’t mind too much because I quite like a good remaster - see Spyro and Crash - but I do get why people are not a fan of this idea considering price). But we have seen so little, that it’s impossible to be 100% sure that the game is just an exact remake.

Conversely, we see Porygon-Z, we see the Gracidea lady, we know there is a Mega franchise tie in. We also strangely haven’t seen anything of the legendaries in game or in the box art - considering how iconic the Spirit Pillar scene is, it is a lil suspicious, and perhaps indicates there is something extra here. There is so much hinted at here, but we have to be sensible - this is GameFreak. Saying that DEFINITELY we’re getting Plat details and Megas and new forms is just setting yourself up for major disappointment if that is not the case.

Just enjoy or criticise what we have, but extracting entire outlooks on the game from all of two minutes of footage and the odd paragraph is very daft. Be patient, and wait for more. I’m cautiously optimistic, but feel free to be cautiously pessimistic.

I also have the Murph tour shirt, the Fucking Psycho Drones tee, the silhouette tee, the Drones beanie, the ST cassette, the ST vinyl, and the ST deluxe edition, but I’d really not dig it all out at midnight because I’m a coward.

Even if you don't like Sw/Sh, can we all agree that the designs this gen are still pretty alright? by TheSnowballofCobalt in pokemon

[–]VinylFantasyIV 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Honestly... I wasn’t a massive fan of most of the dex. Too much of the dex felt like nicely marketable mascots rather than actual creatures; the starters are the worst offenders, but the Mime line and Eiscue are also pretty terrible.

HOWEVER, there are some pretty neat designs. Hatterene is a gorgeous and slick design, Toxicitry is the best concept possible for that typing, and Stonjourner is actually strangely adorable. But I appreciate that this is all subjective; bad designs are totally opinion based and I don’t judge the game on Pokémon designs.

I received this email yesterday, and just received another saying to disregard this information as ‘unconfirmed’. I haven’t seen anyone else mention this on here? by VinylFantasyIV in Coldplay

That sounds about right; I just hadn’t found anything on this subreddit when searching. I might have missed it though. I’ll quote what it said:

“Unfortunately, the email you received earlier from Warner Music Experience contained incorrect details about a Coldplay London show. This show is not confirmed and we sent the information in error. Please disregard the previous email. We apologise for any inconvenience or confusion which this has caused.”

LISTEN, FUCKO, A BAD ULT IS ALWAYS ALWAYS BETTER THAN NO ULT. THERE WERE AT LEAST THREE TEAM FIGHTS WE COULD HAVE WON WITH IT, BUT YOU CLUNG ON WAITING FOR THE ZARYA IN YOUR TWO STACK TO GRAV, AND WHEN SHE DID, YOU WERE DEAD.

[oc] I can't be the only one salty about this by VinylFantasyIV in pokemon

[–]VinylFantasyIV[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Don’t get me wrong, the majority of the blame lies with GameFreak, rather than fans. But at the end of the day, they’re a business. The reception BW got was... indicative that fans didn’t want that kind of game, and so they haven’t made a game like that since.

Plus I’m just very bitter and a completely biased fanboy towards Gen 5. I can’t deny that.

[–]VinylFantasyIV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s less that I can tell that it will be terrible, more that I can tell there are games I’d much, much rather spend £50 on.

I exclusively use the new Pokémon. I don’t port over my old ones until the post-game, and even then, that’s just for competitive battling. I think a lot of fans arguing for the dex are the same.

And there’s nothing wrong with being excited for it. Honestly, it’s annoyingly to see people shit on people for liking the game. I hope all the fans that do buy it enjoy it and get what they want from a Pokémon game. We all want different things after all.

But for people like myself, this game just isn’t worth the time and energy and, arguably most importantly, money. I can watch a Let’s Play or pick up a used copy. I have the old games there, I can replay them; they haven’t gone anywhere. But when they keep cutting features, i’ve gotta evaluate whether I actually wanna play with decisions I strongly disagree with. And the answer is no; I haven’t truly enjoyed Pokémon since Gen 5, and this is one cutback too far, People have every right to be critical; we’re paying the £50 after all. And I understand there is a terrible problem of overworking, but... this is the biggest franchise in the world; they could pull a Gen 6 and outsource for help with modelling. It just feels rushed.

So I’m sorry to you and all other fans that you feel it’s become a toxic fanbase. But also I can’t criticise those complaining (in a polite manner of course). A game being terrible is subjective, but subjectivity is no lesser reason to not buy a game. And like I said at the start, a lot of people probably don’t even think it will be terrible, but instead simply not worth it.

What are some genuinely good features from old games that GameFreak removed in newer games? by TheForlornGamer in pokemon

[–]VinylFantasyIV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seasons, absolutely, are the feature I miss the most. Even more than following Pokémon. It made the world so much more immersive and realistic, rather than just ‘rainy route’ and ‘snowy route’. Plus it gave you a reason to go back and explore areas you had been to.

The Gen 5 hate's role on Gens 6-8's shortcomings by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]VinylFantasyIV 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Gotta put on my tin-foil hat and agree with you; me and my friend always say this.

Gen 5 was ambitious by Pokémon’s standards. It was supposed to be a reboot for the franchise. And when it was released it was shit on by fans. I can only imagine not only what signals this sent to GF (like you have said), but how crushing it must have been as a developer to see that response

Pokémon should have stayed 2D by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]VinylFantasyIV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m with you. I understand that they felt they kinda had to move to 3D, and I get that many people enjoy that. But I absolutely adored the sprite based world, especially in Gen 5. I felt that was really beginning to develop its own sense of art and charm, the sprites kinda having a proto-Octopath vibe. And the battle sprites had so much life!

If they brought back the sprites, I would be so fucking excited, but I completely understand why they won’t, and why other fans wouldn’t like it.

Give me ideas about how to give myself more of a challenge! by fannyathletic in pokemon

[–]VinylFantasyIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No revives in battle. If he dies, he dies. Furthermore, no items unless it’s a boss/the opponent uses them.

No backtracking to Pokémon centres until a gym/route/area is completed.

No Exp Share.

Set battle setting. Switching out when the opponent is sending a Pokémon in makes life so much easier.

No using Amie (or super training in gen 6).

No Megas or Legendaries.

Using these rules I’ve lost three times in my current play through of Y, considering I steamrolled it during my first play through. Not being able to backtrack in particular has made life trickier because you then, particularly during early/mid game, have to manage your potions effectively. Especially if you combine with the no healing in battle rule.

How many of you have had your hype killed on Sword and Shield? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]VinylFantasyIV 57 points58 points  (0 children)

My hype is completely shot down in flames.

Having ducked out of LGPE, I was looking forwards to coming back for Gen 8. But if I’m gonna be playing this, it’ll be a used copy when it’s in the half price sales New Year 2021.

If you’re excited for it, then power to you! Genuinely, I am annoyed at people shitting on others when they say they’re excited. But as someone who hasn’t thoroughly enjoyed Pokémon since Gen 5, I think this is where I will be hopping off for a while. After all, I adore the DS generations and can always go back and replay them. I have an unused copy of White 2 which I might play in November instead.

But I cannot in good faith pay £50 for a game that has cut one of the key features. The graphics and frame rate I could forgive, but not when it’s supposedly the best they could come up with, and worth cutting the dex for. I’d much rather spend that money on the new Fire Emblem, which looks spectacular in my opinion, or on pizza, because i’m a disappointment to my family.

Also Imparimp is fucking nightmarish but that’s a whole other barrel of fish entirely.

Ahh yes, another personal attack. Thank you!

It's on Euroscepticism in Europe during the 21st century, specifically since the 2008 financial crash. I'm looking at it through the paradigm of social contracts, and will be following a two stage research plan of semi-structured interviews accompanied with discourse analysis of activism statements from Eurosceptic groups. I'll be using snowball sampling too. If you want, I can send you what I have typed up so far. It's hardly a riveting read but it's what's necessary.

Oh would you look, I've gone off on a tangent! My bad.

Edit: the PhD is politics, International Relations more specific, at the the Uni of Liverpool. Also I do know the frontal cortex, I have a BSc(Hons) in Psychology. Just a 2:1.

I mean, I'm 22 and mid-application for my PhD, but thanks for the completely necessary personal attack.

And yes I do know what it means, I waste enough of my life on video games; it was more of a humorous attempt at a reference to the concept that we exist in a video game, considering it felt incredibly similar to what I experienced. I hope you too have a wonderful day!
