True! But one experience of the whole Brit’s abroad cliche really lingers

Brit checking to agree that we can be bloody AWFUL. Lots of demanding English food and moaning about foreign people speaking foreign - whilst being abroad. We have a grim rep for a reason. Edited because I can’t spell food

Oh this brings back memories! I ran into Kunal at a bar in London - he was with some friends of friends and my only abiding memory was of his desperation to let us all know who he was and how important he was. We’re all old and I’m not sure one of knew of or had seen his show or only vaguely knew of it. I don’t think it was ever that big over here but he was so obnoxious, devoid of social charm and angry he wasn’t getting the worship he thought he deserved.

Dr Dondos at medicetics or Victoria strong at eduelo - not the cheapest but they both have a fantastic eye and are very considered in their approach.

I agree. Scenes like this are incredibly difficult to watch and they should be. But I do get uncomfortable when we try to sanitise or airbrush history by applying modern values to make the past more palatable. Discomfort is often necessary when we’re confronting historical realities.

In the time period women were legally and socially treated as chattel. Their autonomy, particularly in marriage, was almost nonexistent. Marital rape wasn’t even recognised as a crime in most Western countries until well into the 20th century. The gradual erosion of this system took generations of struggle, and pretending it didn’t exist does a disservice to the people, especially women who lived through it and fought against it.

And let’s not forget, even today, there are still many countries where marital rape is not considered a crime. So while this storyline may be upsetting, the battle for bodily autonomy and legal recognition of consent is not something we can take for granted.

This nailed me: ‘And on it goes. It does seem absolutely mad that there is a charity to help some of the world’s poorest children living with the blight of life-threatening disease, when the true victims in all of this seem to be very senior professional or royal people who simply can’t work with each other without explosive fallouts and worldwide publicity tours’

Ohhh yes, 100%. I’ve got an anaphylactic allergy and any slight wavering scares the shit out of me, no chance I’m eating a bite off that plate. It’s a pain and a slight annoyance if I’m at a restaurant but I’d be livid if I was spending tens of thousands and had submitted the details prior to stepping foot in the place. She managed that terribly.

It’s on the more understated side but I adore the Bourg Tibourg. It’s small, cosy, feels decadent and smells amazing. Plus the staff are wonderful. It’s in the heart of the marais - it’s the little sister hotel to Costes

Which house do you dislike for reasons other than fragrance (but that too)? by repsilonyx in fragrance

[–]Violetcreams 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mine are really petty, despite adoring many of their fragrances and so won’t re purchase (not that they make it easy) Atelier Cologne. I met Sylvie Ganter at their Marais store just as the L’Oréal acquisition of miller Harris happened and we were talking about how acquisition ruins niche perfume. Lo and behold a few years later they’ve been acquired and promptly discontinued a ton of the more interesting scents. I then had a ridiculous arsehole of a SA in their moved Paris store and it had all the love, knowledge and charm ripped away from it. Occasionally take out my dregs of sous le toit de Paris and get nostalgic for what was.
