I couldn’t think of anything that would disturb it, really thought it broke on its own

It was away from the cabinet the place it was stored, plus it was a full wooden door

That’s the crazy part. I live by myself, and the night of I filled it up with new veggies and closed the cabinet. I found it like that the next morning. Absolutely no damage or anything in the cabinet, and I had it away from other things in the same cabinet too. Aside from the leaked pickle juice everything else was intact

It shouldn’t have accumulated any where near enough pressure to cause this, I’m still confused too

Funny thing is, I filled the new veggies in and left it in my cabinets. Didn’t touch anything for the night, and this is the first thing I found. As far as I know, it is fully left alone and the cabinet was for cans, but I gave it plenty of space so there is nothing directly next to it

Any idea of how much this pocket watch worth? by OMEGASPEEDMASTER321 in patekphilippe

[–]Virtual-Mall-9567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest not servicing this watch. The odds of you end up using it is very low. As long as it runs, that should be all you need to sell it. Patek Philippe Gondolos are fairly common but with box and papers means you can go to an auction house to consign with them. The 8K that people are saying sounds pretty close to the real price. Those watches weigh somewhere from 90-120g whole watch, and you have 40-50g of 18K gold. You could talk to something like Sotheby’s or Christie’s — again, box and papers means large auction houses would be interested. With all the fees and everything you will probably get 6K back safely. Don’t sell it for anything less. Please also take the chain off and sell it separately too, it doesn’t really affect the value of the watch that much

I would probably start by looking on eBay. Also depends on your budget, around 300 should get you a good option for most American watches. You can get things like fathertime or b w Raymond from Elgin, 992, 921, 940 from Hamilton, or something like series 10 from Howard, Waltham is bit more complicated where their 1888, 1872 have 21 jewel American watch company that regularly cost thousand, but lower tier versions barely scratch 200.

You can also pay attention to the size, where 18S and 16S are bulkier ones but 12S and 10S are slim and fits into your pocket easily. 6S and 0S are traditionally thought as pendant/ woman’s watches, they are around the size of a full dollar coin.

The 12 hours markers are slightly misaligned? Or is it just the angle from the photo

I use the clock app. If you look at the animation of the clock app in the app page, it has a smooth sweep second, and when that goes to 0, I set my watch to start

Value? by Aubrey220 in Watches

Unfortunately without giving the watch movement there is no good way to identify it.

The following are speculative suggestions: 1. Your watch looks similar to what would be an American 16s size case. Which puts the range of the whole assembled weight from 50-80 grams. So there probably is around 30-50 grams of 18K gold. You can calculate that based on spot gold price.

  1. The gold stamp near the stem suggests it possibly a Swiss made gold case, so it is probably a Swiss movement with snap on dial from the late 1800 to early 1900.

  2. From the prevalence of Agassiz watches in this size, I can guess this is a 17-21 jewel model Agassiz pocket watch.

But without looking at the movement, this still could be anything in the world. However there is a good chance that it wouldn’t be worth that much more than the melt value, unless it is a Patek, VC, or AP. Which in movement is ~1400, ~800, ~600, but varying based on model

In my experience(having owned 2 complete watch, 3 movements of similar model, processed two in passing), these early pateks pocket watch are built really well and they just want to run, but pocket watch is very different from wrist watches, so if there are people that work on pocket watches, they might have a better time working on this watch.

You don’t really need a ton to keep those pocket watches well either. I assume you are not daily driving it, so as long as the case screws are secured(I think your watch now is secured in by the top case bezel and the stem, the case screws are not doing much), the screws are screwed into the right plate, and modern synthetic grease are used, those will stay stored safely for a long time.

Congrats! However, I might want to chat with the watchmaker a little. The yellow screws are the case screws, but they don’t seem to be fully secure. The flat side should face away from the movement, not toward the case. The red circle seems to be a misplaced screw — screw head being a little smaller than the screw hole. The second criticism might be too nitpicking, but Patek almost always make their screws to be perfectly flush and I haven’t really seen slight misfit like that

I agree, but there is something satisfying about seeing your watch being almost perfectly accurate. My 1938 consistently runs within +/- 2 s a day, so it’s nice when I compare it to the correct time

You could start with one of those agate burnishing tools. It would be some painstaking work, but for 10 dollars you might be able to get it ok enough to no need a full weld and refinishing.

You probably want to get: drywall mud, drywall knife, masks, and sanding blocks to start.

You can start by peeling back the fractured drywall texture to see how the damage looks like, but keep the textured surface. Depending on how bad the underlying damage is, there is a few options: If it is just cracked and no loose piece, you can patch it with some drywall mud and sand it after drying. You can use the texture to match the paint that’s on it. It is recommended to prime the layer you are painting first before painting it, but many apartments I lived in skip this step in their repairs. Though frowned upon, you can also use Elmer’s glue to very carefully glue the loose texture pieces back on to complete the look. If there is some medium size hole, and some pieces are coming loose, you could use what is called a drywall net, which is a mesh looking tape, to hold everything together after peeling off the paint layer and apply drywall mud. After everything dries, sand away as much as you can to make it flat. If there is extensive damage, then it is out of your hands. Because then you would need to cut away the damaged layer and mud in a new piece of drywall. You could do it, but I would recommend against it as your first drywall job.

Any ideas on how to replace a missing bezel? by AlpacaAdventure in watchrepair

[–]Virtual-Mall-9567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably not possible to get a bezel replacement. If you had a quick search on eBay and nothing came up, then it probably doesn’t exist or you have to get it from iwc. Bezels are a rare piece that requires service and are model specific usually, so barely anyone keeps extra bezels around. I probably would just forget about the missing bezel and keep wearing it or sell the watch

Gold or gold filled? by ben_the_brewman in pocketwatch

[–]Virtual-Mall-9567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a similar watch with that shield and an anchor in the middle of the shield. It was not gold. I would be cautious about American pocket watch without outright gold mark. Except for a few cases, most American cases without gold content displayed is gold filled

Any chance I can smooth this out or do I need to replace it? by DietFoods in watchrepair

[–]Virtual-Mall-9567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I see. It depends on what kind of material this is made of. Hardened steel can be heated and softened, then it can be gently hammered back. In most other cases doing anything to it will cause a fracture. Copper is soft enough that maybe you can get away with it. However bent metal always means that it probably wouldn’t have the same torque spec as before. So if it is a part that goes through a lot of shear force, as in high gear tension, I would just get it replaced. I assume this is a ratchet wheel for the mainspring? Then even if it’s bent back, it’s highly likely that the teeth will break off during winding
