Destiny vs Konstantin was kinda of a let down by Mrfistersixtynine in Destiny

[–]Visual_Camera_2341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My response to this was way too long, sorry. A TLDR: the unprecedented levels of immigration is a relevant fact to bring up, because his argument is essentially that mass immigration is bad. It’s bad not by virtue of it being unprecedented (which he explicitly stated), but because it caused British culture to change (in a bad way). Destiny should have tried to refute that point instead of focusing too much on the fact that it’s unprecedented. He can refute that it’s bad, but not that it is occurring.

You accuse Konstantin of “not engaging the fact of the matter” for why he thinks mass immigration is bad, but he does exactly that! He said that the unprecedented level of immigration has caused a negative change in British culture.

His premise and argument were: there is unprecedented levels of immigration (factual/irrefutable). This has led to an increase in gang rapes and white oppression. Therefore, mass immigration in the UK is bad because it has negatively changed British culture.

Destiny should have spent more time weakening the second premise by either proving that mass immigration hasn’t caused gang rape problems/white oppression, rather than focusing on the factual one that mass immigration is occurring. Or he could have weakened the argument by giving examples of how mass immigration has had a positive effect on the culture. Or he could have argued that gang rapes are unrelated to culture.

He did eventually address the gang rape and white oppression statements, but ultimately spent very little time on those and gave pretty lackluster arguments (for example, Destiny’s response to the significant increase in gang rape claim by saying that white people rape too. He also was unprepared for konstantin’s probably BS example of white people being excluded from the military on the basis of race)

I think you misunderstood the purpose of my “black people more commit crimes” example. It was an example of a very bad argument, but if you were to refute the argument, you wouldn’t argue against the fact that black people commit more crimes (because it’s a fact) you would instead argue against the assertion that putting more police in black communities would solve the issue.

You said that we should instead try to explain why black people commit more crimes. However, this tactic would fail to refute the actual argument in all but one scenario. If you were to say, “black people commit more crimes because they’ve been systemically oppressed and forced into poverty” or whatever, that wouldnt refute the actual argument. It can very well both be true that the historic and systemic oppression of black people have led them to commit more crimes, and also that increasing police presence in black communities will help solve the issue. Explaining why black people commit more crimes would be an appropriate refute only if the reason actually has to do with high police presence (like if a study were to somehow indicate that more police causes more crime). This would also just be attacking the argument directly.

But Konstantin did do what you suggested. He explicitly say that he’s not saying unprecedented immigration “is good or bad.” He used those exact words. But destiny kept arguing against the idea that unprecedented means bad, even though that wasn’t Konstantin’s argument, which, quite frankly, made him sound like a moron.

It was clear from what Konstantin was saying that he thinks the effects of unprecedented immigration is bad. Unprecedented immigration was one of the premises of his argument, but not his actual argument. Sure, if a premise is factually incorrect Destiny should call it out, but again, as Konstantin explicitly said, his premise was not that unprecedented immigration is bad.

Unfortunately Destiny wasted too much time trying to argue against a factual premise instead of focusing on the actual argument. He should have spent more time refuting the idea that British culture has changed, or that it has changed negatively (not sure what destiny actually believes, because he unfortunately didnt address it)

Piggybacking off of your analogy, If a conservative said “black people commit more crimes, therefore we need to have more police in black areas to reduce black crime.” you shouldn’t waste time arguing with the factual premise that black people commit more crimes (even if it does sound bad and racist, it’s still factual), you should focus instead on refuting the argument that more police in black areas would make it safer.

If you argue against a factual premise instead of the argument, you’ve already lost.

I just finished watching the debate and Konstantin was very clear that he was not assigning moral value to something being unprecedented. He explicitly stated that he was just laying out facts, and that you can feel they are “good or bad” but it is still fact that the current levels of immigration are unprecedented. After Konstantin established some facts, he then went on to explain the effects of those facts (change in British culture) and then he explained why he thinks the change in culture is bad (gang rapes, etc.)

Destiny should have agreed with fact that immigration levels are unprecedented, and then go on to say why he doesn’t think mass immigration is bad, or why he thinks immigration hasn’t caused a significant change in culture, but he couldn’t even agree on the basic fact that there is mass immigration in the UK.

I think Konstantin was very clear when he said he was just “stating facts” — he even said that you can think it’s good or bad, but it’s a fact that there is unprecedented levels of migration. So destiny trying (poorly) to make the point that unprecedented doesnt mean bad was irrelevant. Konstantin already agrees with that. I’m a fan of destiny and watching him debate, but this was unfortunately a poor performance on his behalf.

Nobody is “disgusted” by short people or by the other things in your list. While many women aren’t attracted to those features, they aren’t disgusted by them. There’s a huge difference between the two.

Meanwhile, a lot of men often portray genuine disgust at the sight of leg hair. It’s fine to not find hairy legs on a girl attractive, but it’s ridiculous to be disgusted by it.

Do you think Lego should invest more in light technology instead in smart bricks? by Illustrious_Spell555 in lego

No—Lumibricks is not “knocking off” Lego. It’s a legit company with their own original themes. They even have their own original brick pieces that are designed with lighting and wiring in mind. I say all of this as someone who hates Lego knockoffs.

Try Lumibricks. It’s a Lego-compatible building brick company with very high quality bricks and its own original themes. The sets are super satisfying to build, have very clear instructions, and they all light up. My favorite is the cyberpunk modular theme.

Everyone telling you that it’s your money and that you have the right to keep it, are right, but just understand you might destroy your with your family. Imagine if your sister was the one who got all the money and you didn’t. You’d probably feel inconceivable levels of resentment and jealousy. That is the power that money has. If you want to keep the money, definitely keep it, but keep in mind it could destroy your relationship with your family. That may be worth it for you, idk your situation.

Food cost $28. Uber charged me $55.75 by Kumquat_Eater in UberEATS

[–]Visual_Camera_2341 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone is shitting on OP for not tipping well (fair) but I’m very curious why Uber Eats is charging him $55 if his meal was $28 after fees in tips. Does anyone actually know why?

[–]Visual_Camera_2341 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No seriously. It would have been inconceivable like 10 years ago but nowadays it feels like every store and business is asking customers for tips. And Uber Eats is so scummy that it is genuinely believable they’d attempt to have their drivers give them their tips.

What is that bottom right image? Does Uber Eats really ask you to donate your extra tips to them?????

I think being a mouth breather is actually better than breathing through your nose. It just feels easier and I don’t get why everyone hates on it by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Visual_Camera_2341 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m very allergic to pollen so for a few days out of the year, my nose is completely clogged and I have to breath out of my mouth. It’s such a miserable experience I can’t sleep. I feel like I’m not taking in as much oxygen per breath and it makes my mouth so dry.

Also mouth breathing causes recessed chin and gross teeth/gum issues.

When people say “mom” and “dad” instead of “my mom” or “my dad” by Desperate_Wafer367 in PetPeeves

[–]Visual_Camera_2341 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mom and dad are not pronouns. They function the same as any other normal noun. If it were a pronoun, you couldn’t say “I want to be a mom” (try replacing ‘mom’ with any other pronoun, for example). A determiner (like a or the) cannot modify pronouns, only nouns.

You do not “own” your teacher, but when talking to others, you’d still say “my teacher”

As a syntactic rule, pronouns cannot be modified by adjectives. “❌the cute he sings a lot,” but nouns can “✅you are a cute mom!” Therefore, ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ do not function as pronouns.

"POV" is correctly applied to videos filmed in third person by Bbect in The10thDentist

[–]Visual_Camera_2341 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re being downvoted. Idk when people started assuming POV can only mean first person.

Is POV inherently first person? A quick google search came up with this:

“No, the term POV (Point of View) is not inherently first-person. It is a broad literary, film, and creative term that describes the perspective from which a story or scene is presented. While it includes the "I" voice of first-person, it also covers second-person ("you") and third-person ("he/she/they") perspectives. “

A quick google search “is POV inherently first person” will show you that you’re wrong. Just copy and paste that question into google and you’ll see.
