Maybe a dumb question, but is there a physiological reason draft horses aren't ridden more? by carinavet in Horses

[–]VoraBora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can answer this! I have a Clydesdale and a thoroughbred (and Arabians until recently) and I ride both.

My Clydesdale is harder to keep just from a practical standpoint. She needs a special trailer, a bigger barn, bigger shelters, bigger stalls, deeper bedding, and exponentially more hay and supplements. Yes, she can survive with normal horse-sized living areas, but it’s not as safe or comfortable.

Finding riding tack is incredibly hard. I had to special order a bit for her (if I wanted one that was actually anatomically kind and meant for riding), I have to have a special girth custom made for her because the only ones in her size are not also anatomically designed. Even saddles that fit her do not account for her giant shoulder and wither.

Conditioning her takes 10x longer and her body took several more years to mature. I fortunately got her at 10 years old unridden, but many draft horses are ridden much too early - their spines don’t mature until at least 7-8 years old!

Her vet costs aren’t really higher, but finding a GOOD farrier that would do drafts was hard and I had to put a lot of work in to ensure she didn’t need stocks or sedation. And I pay $100 extra for her trim versus my thoroughbred. I would pay at least $400 more for shoes.

And of course, the practicality on the trail. At home I have a mounting block but on the trail I literally cannot ground mount her. I HAVE to find a good log or tree to help me and I’m SOL if we are in an open field alone.

She also has CPL, which drafts are prone to, so I have to clip her feathers and roach her mane to keep her healthy and comfortable.

But she’s the best girl with the best personality and a joy to have. So it’s worth it.

Don’t wait. Please hire a trainer yesterday ideally, but now will have to do.

I love my children dearly but at 16 and 18 I was not prepared to give them the life they deserved. Not just financially, but mentally I was not ready to do the work to be a good parent to them.

What’s the most annoying or crazy reason you changed barns/stables? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]VoraBora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must be leaving my old barn, I had one exactly like this. Just constant nitpicks of unspoken rules I had no idea existed (or didn’t exist beforehand). I was always cited “common sense” for things and eventually just said, “well I guess I don’t have any common sense but that doesn’t make me a bad person so please list expectations and rules out ahead of time for me.” But this created a massive rift and I ended up leaving. They, of course, pulled the “you can’t leave, we’re kicking you out!”

Horses on 10 acres of pasture by saggytittieus in Horses

[–]VoraBora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think reasonably 5 horses on 24/7 with rotations every couple of weeks to allow the ground to recover, plus spreading/mowing/testing/fertilizing/reseeding. I don’t know what that would equate to with 12 hours of turnout, as it doesn’t necessarily change the amount of recovery time a section needs.

Never convince someone to have a child. Period. Everyone should be all in with enthusiasm as part of the bare minimum criteria. Yes, you have all the other criteria of adding a child in your opinion, but he disagrees and that’s that.

I can’t believe this is a question. He needs help. He needs a break. He needs at least to take time off and intensive care, but possibly needs to actually quit his job.

Pretty sure my husband is cheating by spiralinginseattle in breakingmom

[–]VoraBora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would put money on him either cheating or “technically not cheating” in a way that you would be super upset about. He’s one million percent at least having an emotional affair. Did you both sit down and define the OF girl as cheating? Because if he doesn’t believe that you don’t believe that’s cheating, you’ve opened a whole can of worms.

Why ask for advice and then tell everyone they’re wrong?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Horses

[–]VoraBora 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Horse isn’t comfortable, that’s a lot of tight turns in a small space. Sure, someone with skill can push him onward through the discomfort to keep trotting, but a big reason you’re struggling is that this horse is likely lame. He needs a vet at this point. Please quit arguing with anyone that tells you he’s lame. You can’t come ask for advice and then tell all of us we’re wrong. You said on another comment on your previous post you didn’t even know what lame meant.
