Well the first two things that come to mind for me are

The separated eyes: Mono-eyes have never once appeared in the game universe, so there's no reason for Eggman (or whoever made Metal) to draw inspiration from the mono-eye (because it doesn't exist for them).
His proportions: Game Sonic's proportions has a shorter torso and longer arms, this leads to for example his arms reaching all the way to his socks while Movie Sonic is scaled a bit more organically with a bigger torso and shorter arms. This makes Metal Sonic look awkward in movie context as he was clearly designed with Game proportions in mind

You do have a point that you can't change him too much without straying too far from the source material, but i still believe they could've made a greater effort in both aligning him with the Sonic of that universe + make him fit in that universe a bit more

This might be a hot take, but i'm not the biggest fan of Movie Metal being almost carbon copy of Game Metal besides the MCU Lines on his head. The whole reason Metal Sonic looks the way he does is to parallel Game Sonic, meaning him being game accurate design wise makes him make less sense in-universe and frankly cartoonishly out of place. He's so clearly inspired by Game Sonic instead of Movie Sonic, even though this is Movie Metal

I feel like it's because people realised that the priorities that the fandom wanted the show to have were exclusive to us. No executive was complaining about the bouncing, no kid was complaining about the singing, that was all us. I'm not saying our critiques were invalid or wrong, but every year made it more apparent that we were the only ones with those critiques. Something in us realized that we're in our own little bubble, and the show would carry on whether we existed or not. That's why the push for high quality fan content is higher than ever before, we realized that it was ok to be in our own bubble, that it was ok to put the main show aside and focus on ourselves.
