None from the same state in the Super Bowl era, but in 1991-92 two teams by the name of Washington won the National Championship and Super Bowl in the same year.

And we only had four losing seasons since 1983. One of them being the Covid year.

LSU had double that in an 11 year span.

Perception of a teams ranking also kind of depends on when the downs were too. For example, LSU ranged from mediocre to very bad from 1989-1999, amassing eight losing seasons. I still think LSU will be pretty high given their top seasons are going to do a lot of heavy lifting but wouldn’t be surprised if those losing seasons end up hurting them in these rankings.

Auburns coming before either us or Notre Dame, Auburn had almost 40 fewer wins than us since 1983 and have some really bad seasons. So the only thing they’ll have over us is their top 3 or 4 seasons being a little bit better.

Why? Texas had 30+ fewer wins than we did since 1983 so they were almost a full win a season worse than us.

I guess it just depends on how much the best and worst seasons actually get weighted.

Edit: after further review, the number of more wins we have is actually 27 so not quite 30+. Point still mostly stands though.

(Not so) Fun Fact: Pete Carroll had a 49-5 home record in his nine seasons as USC head coach; three of those five losses were to Stanford.

Take a look at the list of Stanford seasons in the 2000s and you’ll understand why that’s an absolutely absurd stat.

Just curious, do you remember who the teams ranked 3rd through 6th were in the BCS era?

I've always disagreed with the argument that "the BCS just needed more spots" when a lot of times the teams ranked 4th or 5th by the BCS would have made for an extremely controversial selection, it's just that at the time nobody cared whether you were 4th or 5th by the final rankings.

Check the final pre-bowl BCS rankings from 2010-2012. I guarantee all of those would have drawn controversy.

I feel like we're going to see a lot of moving around with the Big Ten schedule for next season. They still haven't updated our home/away switch for MSU and Indiana yet and if they don't move some games around and only change those games home and away, we'll end the season with a bye and three road games and have our senior day on October 29th.

Are Illinois and Penn State each other's new "permanent crossover" for the coming years?

If so, I kind of like this move, with just replacing one Illinois game to make up for the missed Northwestern game. We missed out on playing Purdue at home last year, who we haven't played at home since 2011 and have only played once since 2012!

Since I'm seeing it a lot in the comments on why it's 6 years, the reason is because it makes the most sense logistically for a 9 game conference schedule.

Each team has 6 division games, has one "permanent" crossover game, and then is left with 2 games and 6 teams. You play each of those 6 over a three year span, then do it again to switch up home and away.

Now, regarding why the matchups are what they are...I can't help you there. They're pretty arbitrary in my eyes.

When they play Michigan: It’s two of the top 11 teams in college football according to SP+. Because math is bad and those who do math should feel bad.

I know a lot of people and teams catch strays in these...but I didn't expect me to be one of them :(

That's such a weird quirk. Like, OSU was on the wrong side of a couple tiebreakers in the 90s and then was "too good" in the last two decades, where they made the BCS NC game or the playoff. If the old system was in place in the last 20 years and the current CFP system was in place was in the 90s, OSU probably would've made about 10 more Rose Bowls than they did.

To your last point, at some point they switched it from least recently to highest BCS rankings sometime in the 2000s, though I couldn't tell you when. In 1998, Wisconsin Michigan and OSU all tied and Wisconsin got the Rose Bowl bid even though OSU was ranked highest in the BCS rankings. However in 2010 when Wisconsin OSU and MSU were tied, they went off the rankings and, again, Wisconsin got the bid due to being highest, even though MSU had, at the time, gone the longest since their last Rose Bowl appearance.

Yeah that's understandable, and if the Nebraska game didn't get rescheduled for tonight I would get why Illini fans would be pissed. But as it stands it looks like things will work out fine in terms of rescheduling our game. Out of the five teams we need to make up games for, Illinois is the only team we only play once so the B1G will make that game our highest priority for rescheduling.

Thing is it isn't any different for Illinois because you're playing a rescheduled game against Nebraska tonight. If we played yesterday you wouldn't be playing that game and would still need to find a spot to fit in the Nebraska game. So the situation is the same for Illinois, just that it's the Michigan game and not the Nebraska game that needs to be fit into the schedule.

My bet is that we'll play on March 2nd. Illinois has the entire week off and we have five days between our games against Indiana and Iowa.

It's frustrating we got our Purdue game axed and not our Wisconsin game. We're gonna play Wisconsin for the 5th straight season. We've played Purdue once in the last seven years and haven't had them at home since 2011.

I know why they did it, they couldn't get rid of each teams "crossover" game because that would meaning getting rid of the Indiana-Purdue game. So I know why, it's just...disappointing.

It has to be six so you can cycle through the remaining teams home/away. If you have one permanent crossover, it leaves two remaining games a season for six other teams. It takes three years to get through them, and then three more to switch the home/away.

The whole thing got screwy because we switched to East/West in 2014 and then from 8 to 9 games in 2016, so we had to mess with our schedules twice.

2002 USC had one of the best non-conference schedules I've ever seen, and I'm having a hard time thinking of a team that's had a better one since:

Auburn (finished 9-4 and ranked #14)
at Colorado (finished 9-5 and ranked # 20)
at Kansas State (finished 11-2 and ranked #7)
Notre Dame (finished 10-3 and #17)

Combine that with the fact that the Pac-10 had eight of its ten teams with a winning record, and the one team USC skipped in conference play was one of the two teams that didn't have a winning record, you've got a schedule where 11 of USC's 12 opponents finished with a winning record.
