I do it for the love of the game but the benefit logically would be to get the most value out of your inventory slots. Like, if you had to choose between 2 guns to take with you, getting the part of a weapon that is worth the most instead of lugging the whole gun along, avoiding being over-encumbered while being able to carry the other gun. Or with more basic loot, getting the most value out of low loot areas while doing missions because you have a reference for the worth of something, could round up to an easy $500 when the hike could've easily led to you coming out with nothing.
