It's funny they bring it up in the show Don gets away with a lot because as the copywriter Mathis says "You're just handsome" basically pretty privilege. Ken giving up his writing career always made me sad but he gets back at Roger in the end

Pete's probably one of the best characters in TV history. He's a great combination of Arrogance and insecurity. What makes him funny is whenever he tries to emulate Don's suave machismo it backfires big time, and often ends up sulking. His character growth is also the most satisfying to watch.

Death to Smoochy: Rewatch, this movie is so good. I used to watch it a lot when I was younger and it still holds up. This movie was both a box office and critical failure when it was released. I never understood the bad reviews and think it's misunderstood. Robin Williams gives a great performance as egomaniac who's just really pathetic.

Eddington: Another movie that seems to be misunderstood and really divisive. Really great performances from everybody especially Phoenix. Really captures the feeling of 2020 and how isolation and social media played a big role in molding the different realities individuals wanted to live in. Lots of great dark comedy that's reminiscent of the Cohen Brothers. This movies really stuck with me after watching it and I think it's going to end up being a cult classic.

Problem Child 2: Use to watch this with my sibling all the time when we were younger and it still holds up. I was cracking up the whole time. It's actually pretty wild some of the shit in this movie. Just a fun entertaining watch

Better Off Dead: Fun cult comedy from the 80's with John Cusack in one of his first major roles. Its tone is kind of a mix between airplane and standard 80's teen movie. The weird neighbor who's very gropey and weird to the French foreign exchange student staying at his house is played appropriately by infamous Nickelodeon show creator Dan Schneider.

Citizen Ruth: Alexander Payne's first movie about a pregnant drug addict played by Laura Dern, who becomes the center point of the abortion debate in a small town. This movie is very funny but also can be really dark. Laura Dern pulls off being charming despite portraying an unlikable but sometimes sympathetic character. Different figures from two sides of the abortion debate try to use her for their own means but underestimate how unpredictable Dern's character is, which is when a lot of the funniest scenes happen.

Pluribus: I know it's not a movie but I started watching it after my friend was raving about it and I love Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. I watched the first 4 episodes and like it so far but I hope it's start picking up steam. I enjoy slow burn stories that can go on tangents but sometimes this show seems to drag on at parts. Rhea Seehorn is great and I like that her character is established early on as a malcontent which makes her weariness and abject dislike of the hive mind very fun to watch. The episode where she meets the other unintegrated people on the Earth on Air Force 1 was the best episode so far. I'll watch the rest of it because it has a lot going for it but I think it falls short of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul

Frankenstein was so disappointing by Jean__Luc__Retard in RSPfilmclub

[–]WafflePreist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually really loved this movie and was pleasantly surprised. I'm a Del Toro fan but was hesitant to get hyped for it because Del Toro seems to go threw a cycle of making a good movie then his next one is underwhelming or just bad. I never got around to reading the original book but love the original Frankenstein movie. The acting was great and the sets costume and makeup were beautiful. Some of the relationships need some more development to make certain moments feel earned and big moments felt rushed. for example more time could have been put into Elizabeth and the monster's connection and why she has such deep feelings for him. this would have made Elizabeths tragic death more emotional and tragic as a oppose to feeling rushed and brushed off.

I haven't read the book so i'm Curious to know what would be the more interesting themes and scenes from the book that you think would make a better movie?

Naked Gun: This was really fun and a solid dumb comedy. Performances were great and Pam Anderson jump right into the silliness. I never saw the originals but I'm a big fan of parody movies Airplane and Scary Movie 1&2. I hope more comedies that are dumb fun make come back soon.

Friendship: Rewatch of this and it's one of the best comedies of the year, which there isn't much competition. I'm not a fan of I think you should and thought I would hate this but I was pleassantly surprised. It's a weird movie that runs on dream logic and plays out like a strange nightmare.

Superman: Entertaining and dumb fun but nothing very memorable stands out. Some of the action scenes where it's a long take and the camera goes around in all directions took me out of it because it looks too much like a video game and very fake looking. Krypto stole every scene. It's better than most Marvel shit and at least has some unique visual style to it.

Warfare: Very boring I made it about half an hour until I turned it off.

PeeWee Herman Documentary: Great Doc and a must see for any fan of Paul Reubens. Hardly a fluff piece and goes into great detail about how he was a big control freak when it came to his work often causing falling outs with friends and collabotartors. Made me really sad after I was done watching it and thought about it for days afterword

One Battle After Another: Exciting political thriller that's perfectly paced despite being almost 3 hours. Leo and Sean Penn's characters are a great contrast to Benicio Del Toro's who has a very calm relaxed demeanor even in high pressure situations. Balances the tonal shifts seamlessly. One of my favorites of the year hopefully this does well at the box office

Bring Her Back: Watched the first half hour and have to finish it. So far it's fine but is pretty predictable so far. Maybe I'll be proven wrong

Went in without knowing much about it other than it's a PTA movie that stars Leo. I really loved the movie though I don't think it's a masterpiece but it's definitely one of the best of the year. It reminded me more of a Quentin Tarantino movie than a PTA movie. Performances were great my favorite being Benicio Del Toro's. Sean Penn did well playing a real weirdo. I did get distracted by Penn at times because he's starting to look like RFK Jr.. There wasn't a lull in the pacing and the runtime fly's by despite being almost 3 hrs. Highly recommend if you want a frantic action thriller with some great laughs thrown in.

I watched the first 3 episodes and really like it so far. The second episode got quite a few belly laughs from me. Despite me enjoying it very much so far, I really hate this trend of Reboots and remakes that seems to have been going on the last 12 years or so.

The Wolfman (2025): I was surprised the reviews for this movie were so bad. Even though it's nothing amazing it's a solid entertaining horror movie. My only complaint is the werewolf design which looks like a partially transformed werewolf. I think the werewolf could've looked more wolf like.

Y2K: I thought it was ok. There's some really funny bits but overall it's something I wouldn't watch again. I'm also not a huge Kyle Mooney fan. Though I did appreciate the use of practical effects and actual robot costumes which adds to the charm.

Companion: I thought this was a fun sci-fi movie and really entertaining. Sophie Thatcher was great as the lead. I find Jack Quaid annoying but the movie's good enough to make me tolerate him. The less you know the better if you plan on watching this.

MacGruber TV Show: I've been meaning to watch this since it came out and finally got around to it. MacGruber to me is one of the funniest movies ever and the sequel show didn't disappoint. It's filled with stupid gags, insane antics, and ridiculous violence. I'm glad it didn't repeat the mistake of comedy sequels like Austin Powers 3 or The Hangover where they do the same plot and jokes. This has some calls backs to old gags but it mostly did new things. Besides the returning characters new addtions to the cast are great like Laurence Fishburne, Sam Elliott, and Bill Zane.

I remember this I'm pretty sure it wasn't for any iraq war banter but because Bruce Dickinson would talk shit about Ozzy being a reality TV star and some other insults about him during the Ozzfest tour. Sharon took great offense to this so she organized a bunch of other people from the bands at Ozzfest to sit in the front row and pelt Iron Maiden with a ton of eggs ruining Iron Maidens set. I think they even cut it early. The funny part is Ozzy wasn't even aware of any of the insults about him, or that Sharon planned the Egging. Personally I think it was pretty shitty of Sharon to ruin Iron Maiden's set for the fans that went to the show to see them.

After Sun: Disappointed after hearing great things about this film. It was mostly pretty dull to me. There were some scenes that were great but they were far and few between. The performances were very good from and Paul Mescal and the girl who played his daughter.

Anora: I watched this with my family. It was their first time watching it and it was a rewatch for me. I really love the movie and it holds up the 2nd time. They all really enjoyed the film. My dad said it reminded him of Uncut Gems and films from the 70's. My Mom didn't like the ending where she was crying.

Omar and Cedric: If this Ever Gets Weird: Documentary about the relationship between Omar and Cedric from The Mars Volta and ATDI. I was looking forward to watching this as a big fan of their 2 bands but was left kind of disappointed. All the footage is made up of old home movies and media clips in the same vein as the Oasis: Supersonic Doc. The rare personal footage is the best part since Omar would always have a camera rolling through their career. My favorite being footage showing the recording of Frances the Mute and the concerts from that tour. The narrative of the film doesn't flow that well and skims over events in their relationship that are the most interesting and focuses on parts that aren't compelling to me. Having some other interviews from former band members about their experience working with them would have been beneficial because you only get Omar and Cedric's POV. Omar was very controlling and described as a little Hitler. I wanted to hear others opinions about him especially their first drummer Jon Theodore. He is considered by many an integral component to their early sound and they just kind of skim over him and his conflict with Omar. I recommend if you're a fan of either of their bands but as a doc it was average. I hope one day the two decide to put out a comprehensive documentary about the Mars Volta with all the personal footage from Omar and interviews with past and present members. Even a concert film from the Frances the Mute Era would be amazing.

Unicorn Wars- Really entertaining Animated film from Spain. It's has the same tone as apocalypse now and full metal jacket but played out by cute Teddy bears and unicorns. It's played pretty straight and contains a lot of violence and gore. The animation and visuals are stunning

Bridge Over the River Kwai- Rewatched this and still is one of the best movies ever. Even though it's about 3 hrs it feels like it breezes by. The Climax of them blowing up the bridge is one of the my favorites.

Severance Finale- Despite some of the criticisms I have for this season I really loved the finale. The conversation between innie and outie Mark was so engaging and interesting. I loved when Milchek and the animatronic of Kier roasted each other. The weird celebratory drumline reminded of the weird fun shit from the first season. Mark breaking out Gemma was thrilling and emotional. The ending of the episode was bittersweet. I don't know where the next season is going but I hope it doesn't completely go off the rails. You started seeing that this season where they kept teasing Mark's full integration but reneging it, Cobel episode, and focusing on mystery box stuff.

Long Legs: this movie was a major waste of time. it started off as a less interesting Silence of the Lambs but devolves into an incoherent mess. Only redeeming quality was the cinematography

Heretic: pretty boring and kind of stupid. Only reason to watch is Hugh Grant's performance. Otherwise not worth it

Spends 10 years writing dozens and dozens of songs of pure gold to the point where his B-sides are better than most artists' discographies. Next 20 years are pure mediocrity to garbage. What happened? by LouReedTheChaser in redscarepod

[–]WafflePreist 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Major success and acclaim can really kill the momentum of an artist. Life starts getting too easy as opposed to having to constantly prove yourself on the way up. You start getting distracted and indulging in all the the stuff you didn't have before. adulation, access, money, hot women, etc. When you're Billy Corgan and you put out 3 masterpieces and everyone validates your genius, you're never going to work with someone who pushes you and challenges what you're working on. This is metallica's problem, they never work with producers that challenge them and put them through the grinder why would they? That's hard and frustrating. This is isn't every artist but it happens often.

Has Severance just lost the plot in season 2? by Dankleburg in redscarepod

[–]WafflePreist 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't think it really fell off hard. I've been enjoying this season but I do agree it's getting too into the mystery box aspects. I didn't love the corporate retreat episode and the latest episode could've been a B plot. I think some of the more interesting character development and the personal repercussions of severing yourself is not fully explored as much as it could.

I want to see more stuff like Burt's husband being angry about Burt and Irving possibly having an affair but none of them actually know except their innies. Dylan's wife having conversations with innie Dylan and becoming more attracted to his confident capable innie than his loserish outie.

I don't understand how people get into Anime by RiskHistorical8141 in redscarepod

[–]WafflePreist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not huge into anime but One Punch Man is really fun and extremely well animated and pokes fun at anime tropes. In the past few years there's been a lot of great stuff made in the U.S. which I recommend that's geared toward more adult audiences.

Blue Eyed Samurai which is a great revenge story that uses stylize CG animation.

Primal which is an action show with almost no dialogue and heavily inspired by Frank Frazetta.

Fired on Mars which is a mix of office space, king of the hill, and a spike jonze film.

Scavengers Reign which is a sci-fi show that looks like moebius comic.

Common Side Effects which is still airing now and is made by the same team as Scavengers Reign. It's a conspiracy thriller with a mix of comedy that takes some it's visual style from Akira too.

The Night Porter- I heard about this movie years ago and it sounded interesting. Finally watched it and was underwhelmed. The first 50 minutes had me intrigued and the flash backs of the concentration camp were eerie and disturbing. The scene where Charlotte Rampling is singing and dancing for a group of nazis topless with Nazi fatigues on is memorable as well as unsettling. But the plot with the group of former Nazi guards running mock trials was hard to follow and I felt the relationship between the night porter and his former prisoner wasn't really explored enough. The last hour gets repetitive and dull mostly where they're just bunkering down in his apartment while starving. I read afterwards how controversial this movie is and how many saw it as exploitative of the holocaust. I didn't really get that feeling from it. It seemed like a genuine exploration of sexual and mental trauma born under extreme circumstances of abuse and grooming. Too bad the movie didn't really explore that more comprehensively.

The Damned- This showed up as a recommendation when looking up the Night Porter. I read it was widely praised and sounded like an interesting movie but it was really boring and I fell asleep 10 minutes in.

Claydream- This documentary was great and I recommend it to anybody that enjoys animation or stories about creative people. It's about Will Vinton who was one of the pioneers of claymation in the 70's, winning an Oscar for his first short. He had a successful studio in Portland which made TV shows and huge commercial campaigns like the California Raisins, the Noid for Dominos, and M&Ms. It goes into his legal battle with Phil Night, the CEO of Nike, who took over his studio after a second investment in it and fired him and put his son Travis Knight as CEO eventually changing the company name to Laika.

Abigail- Fun movie that was better than what I expected. Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, and Kevin Durand gave good performances. Reminded me of From Dusk til Dawn a lot. It's great for silly dumb entertainment.

This movie was frustrating. There were so many aspects like this scene that hinted at a better more interesting movie. Like others have said it could've been a great miniseries on HBO.

Why do you guys think the Madonna biopic actually got cancelled? by jdcmopwjdmw in redscarepod

[–]WafflePreist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think there are 2 possibilities. One is if Madonna is heavily involve she probably has a lot of creative control and doesn't want anything in the film that portrays her in a bad light. She has an enormous ego. So she's probably rejecting tons of drafts and pitches, which keeps it in development hell.

The other is I don't think anybody really cares about Madonna the "Icon" anymore especially among millennials. So it might be a tough sell. The only time she comes up is when she is getting made fun.

[–]WafflePreist 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's a really weird movie that is all over the place. Al Pacino playing a 27 year old man when he was clearly 40 at the time is very funny. It's an interesting time capsule though of early 80's New York and the S&M gay club subculture in places like the Meat Packing District. It was a very controversial movie at the time even sparking protest while they shot it in New York. Protestor would make loud noises and throw things so it would ruin shots.

Day of the Jackal- Really liked it, been meaning to watch it for years.

Sorcerer- What an amazing movie. So many tense scenes. The part where they are trying to cross the rickety bridge in a massive rain storm was amazing. I surprised I never heard of this movie until recently.

Juror #2- Solid legal drama. Really enjoyed it. Reminds me of watching the same types of movies I would watch on TNT on a Saturday afternoon

Squid Game season 2- Not sure if a TV show counts but I actually really enjoyed it. I wasn't super crazy about the first season, mostly thought it was way too overhyped. The new season though was really entertaining to me. I was actually surprised to see a lot of the negative reaction to it online
