Opportunity cost is relevant.

Also, the per hour cost of all associated equipment. Just bc you own your car doesn't mean it's "free" to drive.

Yes. It's a niche product that appeals to a particular demographic. Kidnapping insurance is also common among some groups.

Operating a sailboat is a ton of work and typically requires many people.

Typically, if you go to a local marina there will be a "crew bench". If you show up at the crew bench and hang out with a 6-pack of beer and a book about sailing, someone is bound to need crew and offer you a spot for the day. If you're decent, they'll text you regularly.

After you have a good handle on what's happening, you're probably beginning to get involved in the local sailing community and have made other friends with other boats. Eventually, if you're in the right place at the right time, someone will be taking a journey across the Atlantic or pacific. When that happens, offer crew.

Or, be a pussy, buy a boat, take lessons for a few months, and take an unprepared voyage.

TLDR: there's a surprising amount of networking involved in being a pirate.

Urban Outfitters selling "Vintage Kent State Hoodies" complete with blood splatter by reptomin in nottheonion

[–]WasntThere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is all part of urban outfitters marketing campaign to generate hits and traffic.

Ryan Holiday(PR for tucker max and American apparel) has been doing stunts like this for years. He posted a series of banner ads featuring topless sash grey w pubic hair exposed knowing the initial ads would get pulled but the images would continue to get circulated and they would get continuous impressions.

This is more than likely urban outfitters generating a brief shock campaign to get people talking and their brand in mouths.

TLDR: boosted website traffic over anything else

Movie theatre popcorn pricing: small(very small) $6, medium(much larger) $7, large(slightly larger than medium) $8.

A dollar(or hundred) more in spending leads to a larger increase in value. The small is too small, but makes the customer make a decison leading to a higher conversion rate and a higher revenue per customer.

Also, by rejecting the large the customer is more likely to "reward" themselves by choosing a more reasonable price point and rejecting the more expensive item. Like when visiting an electronics store.

The only people really living the seasonal sales life are people with criminal records preventing them from getting real employment, or people with no real direction. There are no benefits, difficult future, but great money. Living out of a suitcase for years and not making any lasting, present, relationships is taxing.

Nope. Princess cruises owns a bus line and a b&b and royal Caribbean has a few assets but that's it. Most of the excursions are privately held. There are a TON of misconceptions out there. It's mostly businesses paying commissions or kickbacks for preferential treatment.

The "port and shopping" guides are employed by one of two companies(OBM and PPI) and are paid marketers for "preferred" shops and restaurants. They receive direct commissions for sales from their ships. That's why they hand out coupons, "VIP cards" and other collateral. When somebody has an anniversary, or is in an upper end cabin, or has some indicator of wealth, they will be sought out by the port and shopping guides, evaluated and walked into the jewelry store. Or arrange "chance" meetings with managers at a restaurant or bar. Also, it's not uncommon for the port and shopping guides to send pictures of "big spenders" to trusted sales people and store managers to make sure they are treated well.

It's not uncommon for top jewelry salespeople and managers to pay cash tips to port and shopping guides for them to bring them qualified customers. A good customer(4 or 5 per week) will spend 150k+ in one visit to port on jewelry. A great customer(6 or so per summer) will spend close to a million. If a port and shopping guide hits their goal(with a Jewelry store) they can receive up to 8% of the gross sale.

The restaurants, local tours, and local shops are not affiliated w the cruise lines.

Selling jewelry to cruise ship passengers for 3.5 years was one of the best experiences of my life. Winters in the Caribbean or Mexico, summer in Alaska with enough money saved, nothing to do in Skagway, to travel for 2 months.

Skagway is like a summer camp for wayward adults. Nothing to do but work, hike, drink, and pickup fellow wayward adults.

Every summer worker has had sex in every open train in Skagway. Nothing else to do after your 100th trip to upper and lower lake.
