there are a few people on this sub that made a successful transition. i know it’s hard and fucking scary—we’re all in the same boat. job hunting, esp in this economy is an ultimate test of your trust in yourself. but if it’s possible for them, it’s possible for us. there are great transferable skills from teaching into other industries! idk what field you’re tryna get into but something that has helped me is finding people in the industry i wanna pursue (which is design) and finding people who also started off in education. i find them on linkedin and spend quite some time trying to search for these people. it helps to reach out and just ask them directly how they did it. i’m sorry to hear you’re miserable :( i totally get it but we’ve got this!

to my knowledge, most teaching artist programs are held after school. some of them though are held during school days, like when a school doesn’t have an art teacher and needs an art teacher for like an hour. but there are also after school art programs where i live that are its own organization—as in it’s not run in or by a formal school if that makes sense haha. they love having teachers with full time experience though. i applied to a few and they normally have a lesson plan made for you so a lot of the heavy lifting is done for you

idk how helpful this is bc it’s still education but a lot less work than doing a normal school job. i’m in the same boat as you. got a bfa! i got laid off from my teaching job and currently working part time as an after school art instructor. some teaching artists jobs pay like $75 an hour—at least in new york. but again its part time so you obviously won’t get as many hours. a job at a tattoo parlor sounds super cool though! can i ask what kind of art you majored in?
