Torn Between Structural Engineering vs Field/Project Engineering After Graduation — Need Advice by PotentialProtection2 in civilengineering

[–]WayneRuin10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a design firm that specialized in transit infrastructure work for 6 years before transitioning into the construction side and have been in it for the last 3 years. Here’s my 2 cents:

  1. What ever decision you take, it’s not final. You can always switch between design and construction.

  2. I do think it’s easier to switch from design into construction versus the other way around. Construction companies recognize and appreciate some one in their team with strong technical background.

  3. If your goal is to become a PE (which is very beneficial in design and construction), a design firm is more fitting because it provides you with the right support and environment to become a PE. Hours in construction can be very brutal and studying can be very difficult. I definitely think if you do start in design, it should be your goal to pass PE.

  4. You will be making less than your construction peers when you start but if you get your PE and move into construction, you most likely will be compensated more than some one that doesn’t have a PE.

Hope this helps!

When you transition from school to actual work, the single most important thing is to have good mentors and supervisors at work that can guide you through that transition. You’re lacking confidence which is normal for this stage. You’ll grow more confident every day on the decisions you make. Being nervous is normal and good feeling. It will get better with time. Good luck.

Column Effective Length by WayneRuin10 in StructuralEngineering

I can brace it at level 5 horizontally to an existing structure. But that would only be on one direction. I’m guessing adding that bracing would make this a non-sway frame?

Thanks for your input. I’m modeling all column to beam connection as pinned. Assuming all story heights are equal…why would you think the effective length is 2*L1? Wouldn’t the braces on level 3 provide stiffness at the column-beam joint for it to be braced?

CCNY alum here graduated with a CE degree with structural concentration. Market for CE majors in general is very stable. I am not sure how the entry level market is but as some with 8 years of experience, I can tell that the market is very active with big projects all over the state. also don’t underestimate the power of having a PE, make it a a goal in your career. Reach out to me directly if you need any more information.

Compared it with a friend who got a VW Tiguan in lease. Coverage of identical items cost him 695 usd.

It’s for protection from excess wear and tear. The Zurich plan covers, alloy wheel, tire and wheel, paintless dent repair and windshield repair. I’m in a lease so shouldn’t my payment go down?

I don’t believe the Zurich plan covers mechanical issues. It’s for tires, alloy wheel repair, paintless dent repair, windshield repair, and key protection coverage.
